Emperor Bloomberg’s bureaucracy gone mad: City inspectors hassling heroes who feed Sandy victims
NY Daily News ^ | november 20, 2012

On Sunday, Eustace and dozens of fellow firefighter volunteers served 800 free hot meals from a steamy Army tent in this hemorrhaging beach community, where there are no longer stores or restaurants, where most people have no gas to cook with, no heat or hot water and no hot food.

That afternoon, a freon-blooded inspector from the city’s Department of Health issued Eustace a notice of violation for not meeting the same food-handling standards as, say, the Four Seasons.

This is beyond outrageous.

This is Emperor Bloomberg’s bureaucracy gone completely mad in a time of death and destruction in the week of Thanksgiving and when the decent people of this city have united to help the unfortunate.

Even the Grinch who stole Christmas would have protested.

Then last Friday, a Buildings Department inspector started checking the soundness of the tent poles. “We told him to take a hike,” says Eustace. “Then on Sunday, as we fed 800 to 1,000 people, I served one dazed-looking woman, middle-aged, tired, and I asked how she was doing. She said, ‘Best I can. The bulldozer is coming tomorrow.’ My heart just broke for her as she took a plate of hot food and prepared for her home to be demolished.”

Then two officious bureaucrats wearing Department of Health jackets arrived.

“One has a clipboard and a camera,” says Eustace. “The other does the talking. He asks who’s in charge. I said this is a volunteer operation. No bosses. He starts asking if we have hairnets. I say, no, just helmets. Rubber gloves? No, work gloves. Thermometers? I say, ‘Yeah, rectal and oral, which one you want?’ ”

The Health Department inspector wasn’t amused as he started marking boxes on a bureaucratic form.

Sounds like the rectal thermometer should have been inserted with prejudice.

People do not realize that big government does far more to harm, then it can ever can do to help. This is a prime example. The next time you are standing in a line that you are required to stand in to acquire some government license or pay some fine, just ask yourself, is this government doing more to help its citizens or doing more to harm its citizens ?

That HAD to feel really, really good.

What a bunch of statist knuckleheads. I'll bet these east coast Barney Fifes wouldn't have been so quick to quote regulations if they had lost everything and been left hanging by the government. In fact, I'm thinking that bowl of chili would have looked awfully good to them.

no surprise here; and it wouldn’t have surprised me if Bloomberg himself had personally sent those particular inspectors

the only way to get rid of a cock-a-roach is to shine light upon it..

I would have stood up on a table in the tent, and in a loud voice said, “Attention, these fine people from the city health department want to shut us down. They say we do not have a permit. You all can either throw away the food you have and go home hungry, or you can turn your backs while I physically throw these bastards out, so that there will be no witnesses, or you all can deal with them yourselves....

I do believe the message would be received..

Guys like Eustace, and many of us here are the backbone of America. The need is recognized and we don’t ask what absurd governmental hoops do I need to jump through, we step up and get it done. Screw Bloomberg, screw nanny-state big government mentalities on both sides of the aisle. These self-important bureaucrats can all rot in hell.

You are exactly correct. Did that exact thing just yesterday. A government agency screwed me over and while I was there, watched them screw over a few other citizens with impossible to meet demands. The government official actually flatly stated a lie right to my face. Made sure everyone in the office knew we the people will not take lies from our government standing down. And if you do it correctly and respectively, they will not arrest you.

I commend the fire fighters and everyone else pitching in to help but I have to ask. What did the people in NYC think they were asking for as they continued to re-elect nanny bloomberg and all the rest of the ‘rat bastard statists who want to run every aspect of everyone else’s lives? This is what you folks asked for.

If by, "with prejudice," you mean, "with a 15 lb. sledge," then I agree with you completely.

The unions are deterring electricans, plumbers and carpenters from out of state and the government is deterring volunteers to help the people stuck in this disaster area. Unions are driving up the cost of repairs and slowing down recovery.

It’s a limo-liberal Utopia.

I’m really glad volunteers are helping out up there because fema would have never showed up. There are a lot of old people who are suffering and dying. The city is too busy harassing volunteers to find places to relocate the poor and weak and to help them apply to FEMA for temporary housing aid while their places get repaired. It is the responsibility of the city help people understand FEMA and to help clueless and poor people learn to locate places to go. NYC is putting New Orleans to shame in the stupid and careless department.

Everyone works so hard after a disaster, except liberal government workers and union bosses.
