NEW YORK (AP) — Detectives on Monday searched for a balding, middle-aged man seen wearing an overcoat and carrying a duffel bag after a shopkeeper was shot dead as investigators tried to figure out whether a violent armed robber or a serial killer had slain three business owners in the past four months.

After the latest killing, detectives discovered the same gun was used in the fatal shootings of two other shopkeepers when ballistics matched the .22-caliber gun shell casings on all three. On July 6, Mohamed Gebeli, 65, an Egyptian immigrant and a Muslim, was found shot in the back of his shop, Valentino Fashion Inc. On Aug. 6, Isaac Kadare, 59, also Egyptian but Jewish, was shot in the head in his store, Amazing 99 Cent Deal.

I think they’re making connections where there aren’t any. Almost all of these little stores are owned by ME immigrants (Jewish, Muslim or Christian) or Pakistanis, and I doubt that the killer knows their religions. The shops are open late and these shopkeepers usually work alone and don’t have surveillance cameras, so they’re probably victims of opportunity. It does sound like there’s something weird to the number part of it, though.
If your theory is right the police may want to check the videos of businesses that do have cameras since the killer would case the place first.

He has been casing the places, and from nearby videos, they’ve turned up a guy with a duffel bag at two of the places (which aren’t near each other). He obviously knows at what time the store is likely to be empty, etc.
The first drawing they released showed a black guy, but the man in the video appears to be white and possibly, in my opinion, middle eastern himself, possibly a Turk or an Egyptian. However, he may have nothing to do with it and could possibly be a supplier or somebody who had a reason for being at these stores.
What a surprise. Do an image search of the victims names and what do you find? They’re all “white” guys.
After future killings the police will discover that the connected points of the killings will form a polygram.

Noting a pattern is not making a conclusion, but if cops and journalists are advancing a pattern to these killings it should be an actual and not BS one.

of Middle Eastern origins of every kind in Brooklyn. I
haven’t seeen anything since then suggesting other than
opportunism. I *might* be wrong.
With the economic climate as it is - easy prey is easy pickings...opportunism may become the rule of the day in the near future! That guy may be the tip of the iceberg then...

63 years old, of Staten Island. Not sure how the NYPD
tracked him down.
Update: you were right in your surmise and I was wrong
in my first and later reply. “John Doe Duffel Bag” (am
not giving his name bc of the others who share it). is
a delusional nut-case, and it may well be that he targeted
his victims because of perceived ethnicity. (although
two at least religions are represented). He also was known,
albeit casually to his victims; another of his sales route
clients recognized him. He has several arrests in his past.
Despite that, he can be “personable.” I was really wondering
how the victims were taken off guard by the sort of person
I was incorrectly surmising to be the perpetrator.
Actually you were correct - it wasn’t a directed hit by a nation state - a crazy person who visited these people - and he folded in their ethnicity into the equation - but as you’ve stated - he was targeting them because they were easy to target - I would say location has to be a big factor in that as well...
I do wonder, however, where or who, taught him about these “perceived ethnic” factors...hoping or leading him to act the way he did...kinda like a “social bomb”...or maybe that’s just going to far into the analysis???
