Prayers going up
As Karissa Smith was browsing in a local library with her babbling 4-month-old daughter, an older man rudely told her to quiet her baby or he would. Smith responded, “I am very sorry for whatever in your life caused you to be so disturbed by a happy baby, but I will not tell my baby to shut up, and I will not let you do so either.” The man put his head down and apologized, and told her the story of how his son died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome over 50 years ago. He had repressed his grief and anger all those years.
In Psalm 13, David expressed his grief. He addressed God with raw and honest language: “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (v.1). These questions reflected fears of abandonment. David’s language of distress gave way to a plea for help and reaffirmation of his faith in God’s love for him (vv.3-6). Confidence and firm resolve came alongside the cry of distress.
We all go through dark nights of the soul when we wonder if God has abandoned us. As with David, our aching can give way to joy when we approach God honestly, plead for help, and reaffirm our trust in a God whose love for us will never waver or change.

Freeper friends can you please distribute to others that would be interested reading a good book about a tour in Iraq? This is written by a true hero and if you see some of the details you will agree. I served with the author in Soc Trang Republic of Vietnam he was a helicopter engine mechanic in 1967-1969. He returned to Iraq to serve a year tour 2004-2005 as he was approaching the age of 56 as a platoon sergeant of combat medics. This book deserves to have a wide distribution and the story is touching.

About the Author
Jeff Dahlin was born in Chicago in 1948. His family moved to Tennessee in 1949 and then to Lisle Illinois, a suburb of Chicago in 1954. Dismissed from high school in 1963, the family moved to Oak Park Illinois, where he graduated high school in 1966.Dahlin joined the Army in 1967 and was sent to Vietnam in September 1967 serving until August 1969. He enrolled in college on the GI bill but left school a year and a half later to hitchhike across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America for six years. Working a variety of dead end jobs he settled in Polk County, Tennessee in 1977 and took up a career as a white water river guide.Dahlin joined the National Guard in 1990 and retired as a master sergeant in 2008. He is married and has a daughter in college.

Jeff Dahlin wrote Iraq Chronicle while he served as a medical platoon sergeant with l battalion 278 Regimental Combat Team. Beginning with departing from Tennessee with the cheers from hundreds of roadside onlookers to arriving in the sweltering humidity of southern Mississippi for training, Dahlin introduces members of his platoon and as training continues, witnesses the transformation of weekend warriors to full time professional soldiers. Training cumulates at the national training center in southern California with a simulated attack on an Iraqi village followed up by a fruit loop race in a rain swollen ditch during a freak desert storm. Tensions within the platoon begin to arise when the regiment is shipped to Kuwait to prepare for a road march into Iraq. Long lines and a shortage of ammunition, sand storms and civilian contractors add to the stress. Scrap metal salvaged from a landfill to provide “Hillbilly Armor,” for the units vehicles was responsible for the Defense Secretary’s statement that, “You go to war with the Army you have not the Army you want.” Entering Iraq, Dahlin presents vivid first impressions of an alien land and culture. A “welcome to Iraq” roadside bomb hit his convoy only two miles from its destination FOB (forward operating base) Caldwell in Diyala Province. Recounting mounted and foot patrols from a medics point of view, he gives a unique prospective of infantry operations. A night ambush gone bad or Iraqi civilians pleading for medical attention; Dahlin’s account is funny, sad, intriguing and doggedly brings into focus the ongoing tragedy in Iraq.

A little colder than Florida?
Elsworth’s air museum is well worth the time and money. I was fascinated by the B29 they have
25 years ago, I was driving through South Dakota, returning to California after visiting my brother at Minot AFB in North Dakota. Out of the corner of my eye out the drivers side window, I saw some movement. It was a B-1. He flew right over my car at about 200 feet. I tried to follow him visually out the passenger side window. He disappeared in seconds. You couldn’t see him. Amazing.

Very conservative area, beautiful too. Our weather is not nearly as bad as most think. 71 degrees tomorrow. Good shopping, great medical facilites, no state income tax, good airport, some very nice restaurants, low unemployment rate, low crime rate, lots of cultural events and big name concerts, wonderful friendly people.
But, don’t tell anyone. We’re trying to keep it a secret.
I spent six years at Elmendorf AFB. Loved it there, too.
