Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings
in heavenly places in Christ.

Holy Lord,

How blessed we are to belong to You, Father. During this week when we celebrate Thanksgiving, we lift our eyes to You and wonder: Where would we be without You? What purpose would there be in our lives---what reason for being---without You? You are our life, our sustenance. You are the very breath we breathe. How great is our need for You, Lord, and how mighty are Your works. Father, we love You and need You. We are thankful and blessed to be Your people, the sheep of Your pasture.

Our nation was born as a gathering of Pilgrims and those interested in the pursuit of freedom and happiness. Father, we long for the original intent of America’s foundation to be restored in the workings of our country. Help us, Lord, to teach our children and grandchildren the values and morals of those who sought You in founding this great nation. May we return to You, Lord, and be blessed.

Grant our military patriots Your protection and grace. For those who are celebrating the holidays away from home, we pray for Your peace and Your comfort. Guide each of our troops to a close and personal relationship with You as they grow in grace and in knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Father, we know that You are looking for those who desire to be more than ordinary Christians. We pray that we would have the kind of hearts that would seek to host Your Presence upon this earth. Give us a steadfast desire to bring Your Will to this earth as it is in heaven, that the Name of Jesus Christ may be glorified. We pray this in our Blessed Savior’s Name, Amen.

Falling Short

November 19, 2012

One of the fads of 1970s America was the motorcycle jump. This trend reached its high (and low) point on September 8, 1974. Thousands of spectators gathered around the Snake River Canyon in Idaho to see if Evel Knievel could jump across the chasm in a specially designed “sky cycle.” In the end, however, it was unsuccessful. Knievel made it only part of the way across the gulf before his parachute deployed and he dropped to the canyon floor below. Some spectators asked, “How far across the canyon did he get?” But that wasn’t the point. He didn’t make it all the way across, so he fell short of his goal.

This scene is a good illustration of sin. The Bible talks about sin in Romans 3:23, where Paul declared, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No one is capable of bridging the gap between God and ourselves by our own efforts, but the Savior came to do just that on our behalf. Christ perfectly fulfilled God’s standards, then gave His life on the cross to pay for our failure and wrongdoing. Where we could only fall short, Christ’s work, offered in love, accomplished all that was needed.

Our response is to trust Him and receive this matchless gift of salvation.

There is no other name on earth
By whom salvation’s given
Save Jesus Christ the Lamb of God,
God’s precious gift from heaven. —Stairs
The cross of Christ bridges the gap
we could never cross on our own.
