AFA publishes annual "naughty/nice" list--companies hostile to Christmas
Click here for the list ^

Dear Friend,

As the Christmas shopping season begins full swing, AFA has prepared its annual "Naughty or Nice" retailer list.

We have taken the top 100 national retailers and reviewed their websites, media advertising and in-store signage in an effort to help you know which companies are Christmas-friendly.

Over the past seven years, your AFA has stood firm in the "War on Christmas." Companies who used to refuse to acknowledge Christmas now have Christmas "shops" inside their stores. Many of them now liberally use "Christmas" in their advertising and in-store signage. Sadly, there are still some companies which refuse to use "Christmas." They continue to insult and offend Christian shoppers by sticking with their politically correct "holiday" term.

I am so sick of this.
There are multiple holidays and the use of the phrase “Happy Holidays” is not necessarily anti-Christmas. On this particular issue I part company with the AFA. I think their stance on this issue is divisive and makes Christians look petty and ignorant.
Hannukah is a legitimate holiday that involves the giving of gifts too.
This Christian has no problem with “Happy Holidays”.

I demand that people wish me “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays” while I’m busy wasting money subverting the true meaning of the holiday!!! (/sarc)

I too do not have a problem with Happy Holidays --- I believe it was derived from Happy Holy Days, but I could be wrong.

What I have a problem with really is when they are 100% against Christmas, or Hannukah, etc. And want to have whatever they want at the expense of what I want. That is what irks me.

I have Jewish friends that wish me a Merry Christmas and I will them a Happy Hannukah. I could easily wish them Happy Holidays as their holiday is a Holy Day for them.

Agreed. This Christian has no problems with wishing folks happy holidays. I am reluctant myself to wish folks a Merry Christmas if I don’t know that they celebrate. Saying “Happy Holidays” is not anti-Christmas or anti-Christian. I do wish everybody in this country and the world did celebrate Christmas.

Yes, the word "holiday" is derived from "Holy Day" from medieval times.

We were in Target a few weeks ago, and as we walked into the store, I noticed a big Merry Christmas garland hung from the ceiling. It is no ordinary Merry Christmas! It is RAINBOW colored. And I was there again yesterday, and I looked toward the back of the store where the Christmas decorations are located. The Christmas tree displays are RAINBOW decorated.

I have always both terms..."Happy Holidays" and "Merry Christmas". For me "Happy Holidays" incorporates Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

However, a few years ago it did seem like many companies were going out of their way to erase "Christmas" where it had before been used.

I haven't noticed that as much lately.

I’m with a lot of other posters here; “Happy Holidays” is hardly an evil worthy of damnation and boycott. After all, there ARE several holidays this time of year and it makes sense.

I DO have a problem with the true Christmas-haters that will use the time of year to advance their own anti-American, anti-God agendas. If you are business that hates my Christian faith, then I will not feel particularly “merry” about shopping at your store.

As a sun belt dweller I’ve never really understood the whole thing. Nobody ever gives any form of holiday greeting here until the actual day, because our “winter” weather makes it tough to remember it’s the holiday season. Really, it’s gonna be 80 on Thanksgiving, and with a little luck will stay like that through the rest of the year. Who can remember to say “merry Christmas” in t-shirt weather?

Are we really getting mad at office supply stores for not being Christmasy enough? The whole “war on Christmas” thing started off silly and have devolved to moronic. Really, you guys need to stop nailing yourselves to crosses, you’re trying way too hard to insist you’re persecuted. On the one hand you complain the holiday is over commercialized, and then you whine when companies don’t have Christmas mentioned enough in their displays. You have mutually exclusive goals, pick one. Better yet, pick neither.
