Hostess employees in Nash County, North Carolina on Friday were relieved that they would lose their jobs because union workers would not agree to an 8-percent pay cut, which was approved by a bankruptcy judge, and end their strike, which crippled the company's factories across the United States.
Their reactions were surprising, because Nash County has an unemployment rate of 11.1 percent.
Lamont Phillips, an employee, said the company had been, holding this over our head for a long time, and he was relieved he did not have to deal with that anymore.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down, he said. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
Phillips said his potential layoff was a "relief" and his "plan is to find another job."

Well I hope he gets another job. You may have to move though. I think that most people who are unemployed for a long time are people who want to stay int the town they grew up in. Those days are over. Go to Texas or somewhere that is hiring. You will do fine as long as you are not selfish and demand to stay in your small town.
Holy crap! This isn’t even Semi-Semi News!

What he was holding over your head, you selfish, greedy communionist, were the facts of fiscal reality.
Now, I understand you collectivist, greedy, selfish bastards can’t be bothered with reality, but the reality is, if your company (or your COUNTRY) has no more money to handout to you, THEN IT’S GONE, and you need to figure out a way to make those fiscal realities work.
*******
My FRiends, the austerity riots we see in Greece are coming to America.
The leftists that are tyrannically ruling this country (”I won.”) will do whatever is necessary to appease the government-sector unions and to ensure they lose as little as possible.
THEY WILL CONFISCATE YOUR PRIVATE RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS.
PLEASE PROTECT YOUR ASSETS HOWEVER YOU CAN AND PREVENT THESE CORRUPT STATISTS FROM FLEECING THE TRUE WORKING CLASS (THE PRIVATE SECTOR).
Hard to tell these days. Is it satire or real life? The lines are blurring more and more.
Amen. Moved from a teeny town in central Georgia (lived in Ga all my life, in that house for as long as my kids have been alive, it was sad to move from all they new and family) down to south Florida for a better paying job. Costs more to live here, but steady income and health insurance is priceless.
Americans don’t understand. Unions and obama want American businesses to collapse. They hate economic freedom, they want it governed. They want businesses to fail, and there is absolutely no irony or hypocrisy in what this union did. It succeeded and its members won.
Someone should track Lamont and the other union guys to see where they will be a year from now.
Yep...and that's the bottom line.
They believe the government can create jobs and that's the BIG lie.
Just wait until these idiot learn the truth about government.
Holy crap!
That "relief" would be the mill-RATs soiling themselves.
The author missed the rest of the sentence as reported in other publications.
"Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union."
Former Hostess workers in Rocky Mount 'relieved' at plant closing"
Of course the union president doesn't care. He's still on the mafia payroll.
I have family in Michigan. Back in the 90s, I tried to convince my brother to look for work out of state. He wouldn’t do it.
From 2 years ago I had a workman (who has a strong work ethic) tell me all his neighbors had gotten used to staying home and doing nothing, collecting long term unemployment.
That should have been during the Bush years, not the 90s.
Head cold...UGH!
Does anyone know the pay scale & perks that these union workers receive?
It would be interesting to know what they are throwing away.
I’m wondering if these people get “layoff” pay through their union or something? I confess I know little about that sort of thing, especially when a company goes into liquidation. It would explain, though, why so many of these folks are apparently unconcerned. If they’re guaranteed, say, six months pay at 2/3’s salary or something, it would make it a lot less scary to be out of work.
Just speculating, of course. Like I said, I’m not really sure how these things work.
Why should anybody work in the Soviet Union, obama will pay them to sit at home.
Pray for America
Lamont, you may want to reconsider that fairly soon, for two reasons:
1. Hostess really is going bye-bye.
2. The Teamsters know who you are.
Well, I think it's important we speak correctly. Government can, of course, create jobs. Simply hire a few thousand workers to do something, and pay them from the general fund. But it takes the free market to create value, create worth, that creates jobs that pay taxes into the general fund. If the government REALLY wanted to help, they'd open up factories to create products. Or farm. But then they'd be competing against the free market, and violating their charter.
Bingo. The amount and variety of welfare given the “47%” is staggering - equivalent to wage earner making $60,000 a year. They’d be crazy not to welcome the closing.
Eastern North Carolina is one of the desperately poor areas of this country and there will not jobs available for these people - and they are, for the most part, happy, happy.
If he wasn't one of the strikers I,too, hope he gets another job.If he *was* a striker I hope that he and his family *starve*.After all, actions *do* have consequences.
Next week may be Black Friday but sweets lovers across the nation hung their heads in sorrow on a dark Friday yesterday as Hostess announced they would cease making their line of products, which include the iconic Twinkies brand, because of the Bakers Union Strike.
From what I found, they were averaging 12 to 15 bucks per hour. So close to 30K/annually.
Thats right. Every newly unemployed is added to ODUMBI’S welfare army. He wants unemployment to go up now. The Dems have seen how effective the social saftey spider web works in bringing out the votes.
Wait till there is no gasoline, then it will get crazy. That is probably the answer to unemployment. No gas No food and food stamps are no good.
Israel has all the good cards in this game.
You are overlooking the destabilizing of families caused by all your moving around.
That attitude seems implausible, but once you’ve been in a union, it’s easy to understand.
The union sets up management as the enemy - the only thing that matters is that the union win, and for the union to win, you have to screw the company. Their attitude here is “Okay, so we lost our jobs, but that’s just a minor thing - we put the company out-of-business!”
Setting up a common enemy is one of the best ways of generating unity and power - the democrats are masters at establishing such boogie men (Big Oil, Evil Insurance Companies, etc). That’s card number one in the union deck - you never do anything for the company unless it’s in the contract, and when it comes to negotiations, there’s no bending - management is the bad guy, and the most important thing is that they get screwed.
Texas has enough moochers, don’t send them to us.
lol. Fair enough.

As you can see it depends on what they do. The average Joe appears not to be getting rich, but in my opinion the lowest paid person is better off with his job than without. At least they can make their financial obligations - keep that car or home or whatever.
Additionally, that pay scale does not reflect benefits, paid vacations, sick time off with pay, health, paid holidays - if any of this applies at all. Being a union job, I suspect all of it does apply to some extent.
Now they get to go on obama’s 365 plan year around paid holiday, the only work they need to do is vote for commies, and if they are too lazy to do that, those good at voter fraud will cover for them, and you, and me, and the guy next door.
In a government job, his pay comes from an entirely separate source...the taxpayer. Without the taxpayer (i.e. a person who works in a free market economic endeavor), there is no government job.
We have a good friend who was laid off in August. The day it happened he hopped a plane to a trade show where he knew there would be lots of people in his field of work. He did lots of networking in order to find a new job. His severance was about to run out this week and guess what he got a new job. He said that there was no way he could maintain his lifestyle on unemployment insurance. By the way, he’s 62 years old.
How can a story like this not have the facts and figures to make a determination of truth? I’ve casually search with google to find out what the salaries of the line workers are in the bakeries and it is no where. It is like the union is the gestapo on information.
“Phillips said his potential layoff was a “relief” and his “plan is to find another job.”
With obama in the white house and Obamacare the law of the land? Good luck on that. You’ll just as easilly win the lottery, I’m sure.
He has already found another job. He is now a professional voter. With all benefits added in he is making more money now then when he was punching the timeclock and baking twinkies. His new job is secure, he will never get laidoff. Some folks have been riding this gravytrain for several generations.
A friend of mine sells real estate in Austin.
He said Austin is filling up with rich white liberals from New York and California.
True to form, rich white liberals are forcing poor blacks out of their neighborhood by forcing property values up so they can’t pay the taxes.
Tell him, Fred:
guess nobody told the chickenhead that there isn't a big call for unemployed highschool dropout union suckholes these days...
No, No......please don't come here. We don't want any union lover Obama voters.
No, No......please don’t come here. We don’t want any union lover Obama voters.
I moved here about two years ago after retiring from the military.
It’s horrible, HORRIBLE I tell ya! The bugs are awful. It’s hot and muggy. There are wild hogs EVERYWHERE!
People carry guns, even small children!
If you are a liberal you should stay out of Texas.
Go to Chicago, instead.
On a personal note, my wife and I found a wonderful home in Texas. We want it to stay the way it is.
Well good luck with that. There are plenty of job available. Right?
Lots that pay the same wage (even with the 8% cut). Right?
Unions foster a entitlement mentality among the rank and file that makes the members believe they are underpaid and overworked even if the prevailing wage is 30 percent lower in the market.
Just wait until the knuklehead figures out there are no jobs for his qualifications. and he weill be forced to work at 75% of his salary if he is lucky to get a job.
Those numbers at glassdoor reflect salary of the distribution business. Union manufacturing employees make quite a bit more.
I would guess an operator or mechanic makes 25 to 30 per hour. Just a guess of course.
I see you have worked with unions before.
I see you have worked with unions before.
Most Unions keep a lock on information for just this reason.
