The force field protecting Jirayut Latthivongskorn comes from a glossy, federally issued work permit that wards off deportation and lets him get a job, overcoming the legal barriers that have long clouded his ambitions and shadowed his life.
Mailed to homes in fast-growing numbers, the cards are changing the lives of about 300,000 young immigrants, a quarter of them from California, who took a leap of faith this fall by revealing their presence to the U.S. government.
Latthivongskorn's plastic card, with its 2014 expiration date etched between his fingerprint and photograph, symbolizes what he calls his "two-year lease on life in America" -- permission to live and work under President Barack Obama's reprieve for young illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.
"It feels really weird," said Latthivongskorn, excited by his freedom but nervous about its two-year limit. "Now, I have this clock that's ticking."
A rapidly changing postelection political landscape is bolstering the hopes of the nation's more than 1 million illegal immigrant youths. They have a president who says he has their backs and a chastened Republican Party openly reconsidering its harsh opposition to giving them a break.
Emerging everywhere, in cities and affluent suburbs, are people like Latthivongskorn, a UC Berkeley graduate who dreams of becoming a doctor, and Daniel Nuñez, a San Jose leaf blower who hopes for a life in the corporate world.

Bring ‘em in. America has a severe shortage of poverty right now.
DO we need more evidence that the people running this country are insane?
Biden and Pelosi are both spelling brain matter ~ so it’s not simply insanity
I can break the law without fear!
Now to join the Democrats and loot America!!!!
No breaks for criminal aliens now or ever, they can go home, get in line and pay their dues like all the legal immigrants had to do.
They should never be rewarded for illegal entry, whether it was their act or that of their parents.
No exceptions. Yes, I am a hard ass.
...is their king of lawlessness.
An illegal alien advocating for illegal aliens. How many times did the illegals vote for the illegal?
Let ‘em in! Nothing like watching liberals all fighting over who gets what’s left of this place! There is only so much money and the more Takers fighting over that money the more suffering liberals will get. They wanted the votes but they’ll soon find those extra Takers have a very high cost. The more takers the merrier as the faster we can get this matchstick lit and over with.
They are citizens of another country. Let them go there. If your family snuck into any other country on Earth, would you expect them to blubber about you when they catch you? They would send you packing.
This crap is so absurd. You are not instantly a noble person because you are here illegally.
The GOP should do nada for these people, it’s an absurdity.
“The GOP should do nada for these people, its an absurdity.” I agree.
Before we get into this touchy-feely, hands across the aisle, comprehensive immigration crap, can’t we first examine in detail what happened when this took place in the ‘80s? Wasn’t that to be a one time only amnesty thingey? And the biggee, did that stop illegal immigration like they said it would? Where in hell is the conversation about this?
Also the Dream Act just craps all over the many, many thousands of people in countries who have gone to our embassies, proven themselves worthy by documented paper work and now see that entering the country illegaly without any documentation (Mexican border crosers) was the smart thing to do.
Message: we (U.S.) welcome law breakers over law abiding people.
Just to be clear, in today’s America the only Second Class Citizens are Conservatives and Republicans that still believe that we are a Nation of Laws, not Men.
To the Liberal mind, the results of the Election only proved that we God Fearing, Constitution Loving Citizens are the Radicals.
