WASHINGTON (AP) — The two women at the center of David Petraeus' downfall as CIA director visited the White House separately on various occasions in what appear to be unrelated calls that did not result in meetings with President Barack Obama.

A White House official said Paula Broadwell, who was writing a book about Petraeus and eventually became his paramour, attended meetings in June 2009 and June 2011 on Afghanistan-Pakistan policy in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is located on the White House complex not far from the West Wing.

Florida socialite Jill Kelley, who initiated the investigation that ultimately unveiled Petraeus' extramarital affair, and her sister had two "courtesy" meals at the White House mess as guests of a midlevel White House aide in September and October, the official said. Kelley and her family also received a White House tour on the weekend before the election.

Ghostwriting I understand for people who aren’t writers to pretend they are to sell books. But if this woman isn’t a writer, what the hell is she? Who paid for the ghostwriter, and why? Ghostwriting I understand for people who aren’t writers to pretend they are to sell books.

There's a spectrum. From writing and publishing yourself, o having it edited by the publisher, to having a co-writer, to having it written "as told to", to unacknowleged collaborator, to putting yor name on a book entirely written by someone else.

General Rule: if the other guy's name is on the cover, he's a co-writer.

To say that this means Paula Broadwell isn't a writer is to say the same about Tom Clancy (where did all these worms come from?)

When I ask if she isn’t a writer, I mean a professional writer. I had heard her say this biography was an extension of her thesis paper. Can I assume, also, that she hasn’t published before? That brings up the question of what it is she was doing before, besides going to school, and why it is she got a book deal if she is an unknown and had a ghostwriter.

Obviously having a ghostwriter doesn’t mean you’re not an author. I didn’t imply it did. But there’s an obvious reason whysomeone would publish a Tom Clancy no matter who actually wrote what’s inside. His name sells. My question is why this woman was published, and if she didn’t write it what she does. Maybe she wrote some or mist of it, and the ghost merely helped. The question of why she’s being published and whether she is an actual writer or some sort of interloper remains.

I assume that if you are a publisher, General Petraeus has just been named head of the CIA, and a West Point grad, with background in military intelligence, who is doing a PhD thesis on General Petraeus and has extrensively interviwed him for it, walks through your door: even if she’s a complete unknown writer, you’re the one thinking “Which ghost-writer can we get to make this commercial?”
