Texas gets failing grade on its gun laws

The San Francisco-based Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence has released a new report that examines gun laws and violence in all 50 states.

The report, titled “Gun Laws Matter 2012: Understanding the Link Between Weak Laws and Gun Violence,” looks at the relationship between state gun laws and gun violence — as well as assigning a grade to each state based on the strength or weakness of these laws.

Texas’ grade: F.

In fact, the Lone Star State was one of 21 states that received an F in the report.

The center takes issue with the fact that Texas does not require firearms dealers to obtain a state license; it does not allow local governments to regulate firearms; and it does not regulate the transfer or possession of assault weapons, 50 caliber rifles or large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Formerly known as the Legal Community Against Violence, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence is a nonprofit organization. It was founded by Bay Area lawyers in 1993 — just days after an assault-weapon rampage at a law firm in San Francisco left 10 people dead, including the shooter. The workplace shooting also left six others injured.

The full report can be found here.

I’m quite happy to see that my state (Indiana) also earned an “F”. I will were it as a badge of honor.

Colorado and Georgia both got a D. My two home states. Good enough.

I am proud to say that my state also got an F. It has taken many years and much reform to achieve this goal.

If we can get the Texas legislature to pass a law, like that of Arizona, that will allow concealed carry without a permitting process, maybe we can get and F minus! It’s always good to have goals.....

"F" for "Fine For Firearms"

This is an F that I will wear with pride.

I lived in the Bay Area in early 90's and the ONE time I needed help from the Po-lice, they were too busy with some big drug bust and could not be there for 90 minutes. -- I had someone trying to break into my home at midnight and they could not be bothered.

I'll take the F.

They probably gave Obama a B+ on efforts to prevent gun violence.

Texas does have some weirdly restrictive gun laws despite the hype.

CLEO sign off on Form 4's was "at discretion", no open carry, permitting classes were 12 hours on the SAME day last I checked (2008).

They should aim for an F- by signing Constitutional Carry into law like Alaska and other States have done... Maybe it'd help drive some of those folks out of Austin and back to California where they came form.

The only time I called the police in what I thought might be a life and death situation it took them 54 minutes to show up due to a major accident in one area of the county.

You are on your own.

The correct grade for Indiana’s gun laws would be not just an F, but an FU.

While a grade of F has this Texan smiling, we can and should do better. Open Carry would go a long way to help us improve. These morons in Kalifornia really never learn. When I was stationed at Ft. Ord in the 80’s the state had a 15 day waiting period which did not stop a single gang banger from having a field day. What a bunch of loons. Quoting a Vice President “ This is a big F deal. Congrats to all the other states winning a F rating.
