Texas gets failing grade on its gun laws
bizjournals.com ^ | 15 November, 2012 | Tricia Lynn Silva

Posted on 11/16/2012 7:04:13 AM PST by marktwain

The San Francisco-based Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence has released a new report that examines gun laws and violence in all 50 states.

The report, titled “Gun Laws Matter 2012: Understanding the Link Between Weak Laws and Gun Violence,” looks at the relationship between state gun laws and gun violence — as well as assigning a grade to each state based on the strength or weakness of these laws.

Texas’ grade: F.

In fact, the Lone Star State was one of 21 states that received an F in the report.

The center takes issue with the fact that Texas does not require firearms dealers to obtain a state license; it does not allow local governments to regulate firearms; and it does not regulate the transfer or possession of assault weapons, 50 caliber rifles or large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Formerly known as the Legal Community Against Violence, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence is a nonprofit organization. It was founded by Bay Area lawyers in 1993 — just days after an assault-weapon rampage at a law firm in San Francisco left 10 people dead, including the shooter. The workplace shooting also left six others injured.

The full report can be found here.

Texas joins the "elite" group of 21 states that the socialists who wish to disarm the citizens despise. What is not to like? I would like to see a bit more discrimination. Texas can do so much better. It is one of the few (7) states that bans the open carry of handguns. The concealed carry process is much more restrictive than necessary. Universities should not be allowed to deny constitutional rights. Texas can do a better job of making the socialists at the LCPGV even angrier than they usually are by nature. Arizona is in the truely elite group that does not require permits. Arizona has constitutional carry (4 states).

The rest of the story: The states receiving a grade of F from these asshats have the lowest per capita rates of gun violence and the states receiving a grade of A have the highest per capita rates of gun violence.

I looked at the report, Colorado can do worse (According to the LCPGV). I am glad my old home state of Indiana has an “F”. Of course the socialistic NE have high grades like NJ, NY, MD and MA. I am surprised IL is not an A especially with their brown shirt laws like no CCW and FOID.

The insane asylum called "California" - The land of fruits and nuts - trots out their "finest" who see themselves as remotely qualified to "grade" anyone, on anything, much less on guns.

People who grade other people, or states, should have at lease a modicum of qualifications and experience to engage in their foolish quest.

The ultimate realism is, these anti-gun groups ONLY want to disarm the honest, hard-working people...they make no attempt to solve the problem of armed bad guys.

When the people are disarmed, and the crooks and authorites remain armed, it means one thing, and one thing only...totalitarianism. You cater to their whims, or you die...period.

We've seen this happen in other countries time and time again, but the one thing that we do know for sure, liberals never learn, and never will.

The 2nd Amendment is the only Amendment that keeps all the other Amendments intact, remove it and the Constitution falls.

Another reason why Texas should secede. If states continue to let liberalism and Washington dictate the rules for everyone else, it won’t take that long for Texas to ban the death penalty, support gay marriage, lock up all the guns, etc. simply because some federal magistrate will demand it.

I see that West Virginia has the great honour to earn an "F for Freedom" grade, while east Virginia must suffer the humiliation of a "D for Didn't make it" grade.

Get with the program, Virginia!

"F" for "Fine For Firearms"

This is an F that I will wear with pride.

I lived in the Bay Area in early 90's and the ONE time I needed help from the Po-lice, they were too busy with some big drug bust and could not be there for 90 minutes. -- I had someone trying to break into my home at midnight and they could not be bothered.

I'll take the F.

Texas does have some weirdly restrictive gun laws despite the hype.

CLEO sign off on Form 4's was "at discretion", no open carry, permitting classes were 12 hours on the SAME day last I checked (2008).

They should aim for an F- by signing Constitutional Carry into law like Alaska and other States have done... Maybe it'd help drive some of those folks out of Austin and back to California where they came form.

While a grade of F has this Texan smiling, we can and should do better. Open Carry would go a long way to help us improve. These morons in Kalifornia really never learn. When I was stationed at Ft. Ord in the 80’s the state had a 15 day waiting period which did not stop a single gang banger from having a field day. What a bunch of loons. Quoting a Vice President “ This is a big F deal. Congrats to all the other states winning a F rating.

This article is pure crap. Follow the link below to the statistics on murder state by state. For instance California has a murder rate of 4.8 per 100,000 people and Texas has 4.4.

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state#MRalpha

The following states have concealed carry without a license and their per capita murder rate per 100,000 people.
Arizona 6.2
Alaska 4.0
Vermont 1.3
Wyoming 3.2

Note: Hawaii has very strict gun control laws and the lowest murder rate in the nation. Vermont has the least restrictive gun laws in the nation and the second lowest murder rate in the nation. Louisiana has the highest rate and has concealed carry.

Murder in the United States is function of poverty and race and not access to firearms. In fact the rate would be even higher in Louisiana if honest citizens did not have access to legally carry weapons.

It must also be mentioned that gun laws do not mean a damn thing to criminals. They are called criminals because they violate the law. The vast majority of them have priors and legally can not carry a weapon. They carry them anyway because they are criminals.

The only correlation that can be made from the charts (see link) is that states with high percentage of minorities and or high rates of poverty have high murder rates.
