CBS DC ^ | November 15, 2012

Barack Obama is set to begin his second term, new statistics on America’s poverty rate indicate that nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive.

New figures released by the Census Bureau this week found a spike in poverty numbers last year, going from 49 million in 2010 to 49.7 million last year. The numbers may come as a surprise to Congress, which estimated in September that the poverty rate would drop to 46.2 million.

I just had this vision of Bush in a dungeon surrounded by machines with buttons and levers and one lever says “economy” and he pulls the lever to “down” then gives an evil laugh “mwa ha ha ha ha!”

"Raise taxes on “the rich”. And give away a few million mo Obamaphones. Oh, then grant amnesty to 10 million illegals"

You forgot to make Puerto Rico a state. That'll help, bigtime!

But they still have hope and change right?

That should feed them and keep them safe.

CBS isn't pimping this story without an agenda behind it.

I guess we'll just need some "sweeping reforms" and maybe some "expanded presidential powers".

It’s the new normal. We were recently in a rougher part of LA and all the fast food joints had big signs saying “EBT Cards Welcome”. They’re no longer food stamps, they are “Golden State Advantage” ATM cards.

Oh, then grant amnesty to 10 million illegals.

They're just not doing the jobs Americans won't not do, after all!

Population of USA is just under 315 million, so 315MM divided by 50MM = 6.3% not the 16 percent stated above.

Better try that one more time...

Sorry, FRiend, you got your fraction upside down. (50,000,000/315,000,000)*100=15.87%

But only in America could you have a home, a car, cable television, internet and a smart phone and still be considered to be in poverty.

Have a relative who's a welding inspector, travels from Mobile to Houston pulling his camper for 4-8 week temp jobs.
Has always had solid work out of Morgan City, La. his whole life, says he doesn't know how long he can put up with the constant travel and temp crap.
The jobs just aren't there even in Louisiana.

We have those in TX, too. They're called "Lone Star" (ATM) cards here. Many fast food restaurants are accepting these cards here, too.

Reminds me of the joke about the guy who orders the Happy Meal, gets up the window, gets his food and starts to drive off...not before saying, "Oh, it's an 0bamaMeal...the guy behind me is paying!"

That’s pretty much what the poverty rate was in 1965 when “The War On Poverty” began.

Now, 15 TRILLION dollars later, virtually no change.

How dreadful and what a farce of public policy.

Right. I guess sooner or later, anyone with an income plus benefits of less then 250K a year will be in poverty according to these pimps.

I’d like to take a bunch of these “living in poverty” bunch and drop them off in rural Mexico or sub sahara Africa and show them what exactly poverty is.

“The govt is like the family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity based on maxxed out credit cards and helocs on a house with negative equity.”

It’s way worse than that. Aggregate debt and unfunded liabilities for federal state and local government now amount to $279 TRILLION. GDP is less than $16 T. U.S. net worth is $72 T. Imagine being a homeowner who tried to borrow an amount equal to 17 times the family’s annual income, or who tried to get a mortgage equal to nearly 4 times the market value of a house. No sane bank would make that loan.

The only way government gets away with this irresponsible behavior is because it can print money ad infinitum. It need never go broke, as it can simply inflate away its debt by paying it back in dollars worth far less than were loaned to it decades ago. But that presupposes lenders stupid enough not to quickly figure this out. When foreigners wake up and stop lending, the party will be over.

The new definition of poverty in the US now is not living as well as Donald Trump.
