Paula Broadwell fell short of aims at Harvard
Boston Globe ^ | 15 November 2012 | Callum Borchers, Tracy Jan and Bryan Bender

Paula Broadwell, the biographer with whom former CIA director David Petraeus had an extramarital affair, abandoned her bid for a doctorate from Harvard in 2007, failing to advance to PhD candidacy after four semesters at the Kennedy School of Government, and now faces the prospect of an ethical review at King’s College London, where she has resumed pursuit of a doctorate.

The revelations about her mixed academic record add to the portrait of a principal figure in the Petraeus scandal who has refused to respond to multiple Globe requests for comment and hasn’t spoken publicly since disclosure of her relationship with Petraeus and his resignation as CIA chief.

Broadwell left Harvard with a lesser diploma in 2008, a master of public administration, after one additional semester.

She enrolled later that year as a PhD student in the war studies department of King’s College London, where her military leadership research focused largely on Petraeus, according to Broadwell’s profile on the school website. But four years on, Broadwell remains far from earning her degree, according to the department chairman, and her relationship with the subject of her research could jeopardize her progress toward a doctorate.

“We have a very stringent ethical review process,” said Mervyn Frost, head of the war studies department. “We found nothing wrong with her original proposal, but in light of what’s happened now, I suspect we’ll revisit that process.”

One of Broadwell’s former professors at Harvard described her as a self-promoter who would routinely show up at office hours.

“It was very much, ‘I’m here and you’re going to know I’m here,’ ” said the professor, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.

In her speech at the University of Denver a few weeks ago, she said that she was a terrible writer and speaker when she enrolled there and that she had to learn quickly because it was a year long program. She probably had help with writing while she was there.

I read somewhere that Broadwell says she has ADD. Writing a dissertation or a book requires focus until the thing is done. Combine a lack of a gift for writing with ADD, and I can see how she would not have her dissertation completed yet. Also, she is writing about Petraeus’ leadership or some such. It is hard to write about something that is still happening. She has no ending. She wants to have all the information possible about him. And she is in obsession with him. Recipe for disaster!

My husband reminds me every time I mention this woman’s name: diaper woman.

The article is a hit piece.

She was not away from home when she was at Harvard. Her husband was doing a fellowship at Mass General. They were living in Cambridge.

The Boston Glob conveniently left out a lot of information. Paula graduated valedictorian, was president of all-state student government presidents, all-state basketball team member, school orchestra concert master and...and...Homecoming Queen!! While at West Point she excelled and graduated top in her class for physical fitness.

Our president and the administration want to paint her as an evil disaster. Not sure she is. Why are they afraid of her? Are they afraid she will tell the truth?

She might not be a critical thinker, but it looks like she usually gets what she wants. I keep thinking about the woman in Presumed Innocent. Broadwell reminds me of that character.

"It’s interesting that it’s all ways the woman’s fault when a man strays. So because she is clearly attractive and telegenic, she must be characterized as a pushy sl^t, not bright, academically challenged."

Granted, but it's more interesting when the stereotype is true...

So, West Point Grad, Harvard MPA degree, grad studies in London.

This is a hit piece. I remember they used to denigrate GW Bush’s intellect and forget his MBA from Harvard.

One thing about Harvard: they’ll admit the usual run of politically correct idiots and preference quota morons, but, once in, the faculty actually expects you to work - work like a dog - to manage and successfully complete your studies.

Evidently, that didn’t sit too well with this character.

The second hardest thing in the world is to be accepted to Harvard. The hardest thing is to flunk out of Havard.

Captain Astronut? She was busted back to Commander and kicked out of the Navy with an other than honorable discharge.

Yeah, we’ll I’ve had one book published, though it was fiction, and no one bailed me out (maybe it would have sold better if someone had, LOL!). Just seems strange that a so called writer needs another writer. I smell a Rat.

Cheers,
Jim

Actually, she does sound like she might have been somewhat conservative or at least patriotic, so I guess that would definitely not qualify her as a “deep thinker.”

She spoke at a Republican fundraiser at one point. And the Florida woman in the scandal is a registered Republican according to politicalstrategies.com which tracks registrations in PA, OH and FL.

Many professors schedule office hours at times they know most students won’t drop by. Many have their own agendas and resent “personality” students who “sit” on them.

As opposed to showing up when?

In her case, she chose a subject of great interest and had unbelievable access. That made the project worth hiring a real writer to finish the job. Reminds me of Barry’s fictional autobiography. Lol

She should have told them she was an Indian and threatened to sue them for discrimination.
