Wake Forest Baptist Hospital to eliminate 950 jobs

Associated Press

WINSTON-SALEM — Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center says it will lay off 76 employees this week and cut a total of 950 jobs by the end of June.

Chief executive Dr. John McConnell said Wednesday most of the cuts are administrative positions, but some faculty members could lose their jobs due to cuts in federal research funding.

WFBMC is the largest employer in Winston. Ironically replacing RJ Reynolds as the top employer years ago.

From cigarettes to curing cancer.

Wake Forest Medical Center is located in Forsyth County, NC. Forsyth County went for Obama over Romney 53% to 45.8%.

Over the past 30 years Forsyth County’s major corporate employers (RJ Reynolds, Wachovia Bank, Piedmont Airlines, McLean Trucking, Hanes) have disappeared or downsized significantly due to globalization and mergers or the decline of the tobacco industry. As of September 2011 Wake Forest Medical Center was the leading employer with a payroll of 11,750 people. Wake Forest Medical Center is followed by Novant Health (8145 people), the county school system (6,692 people), city/county government (4689. The largest private employer is Reynolds tobacco with 3000 employees, followed by Hanes with 2251.

Eliminating 950 mostly administrative jobs out of a total workforce of 11,750.....sounds like a school system. ;-)

If only the school system would also downsize.

The PICU unit there is staffed by angels! Seriously I have no idea how they can work in that environment. Wish them well at that hospital. They helped us through the darkest time of my life.

It's a shame what has happened to that community/city/area. I remember when I was a child back during the 80s and into the 90s when I was a teen, Winston was where to look if you were from one of the surrounding rural areas and wanted to find a great job. Now, it's only a great place to look for a job.....if you're in healthcare, and that's not looking so good, given this story.

Your posting of those payroll statistics perfectly illustrates how and why our nation is broken and the .gov can’t be funded.

Due to globalization and our policies toward tobacco(in this case) have gutted this community of real productive jobs. In my opinion, healthcare isn’t a ‘productive’ job due to its parasitic nature. Same with the school system and other .gov jobs. This isn’t “parasitic” in a bad sense, it just sounds like a bad word. All service type jobs are ‘parasitic’ to the economy and to us all. Productive jobs(jobs where goods are actually produced) builds capital. ‘Parasitic’ jobs are a drain on that capital creation, because they cost you money, which would otherwise be saved or invested.

Over the past 20 years, we have transformed from a country that builds things for ourselves into a country that just pumps up debt and moves the money around, while calling it “prosperity”. It’s a house of cards, and will NOT work over the long term. Until this is truly corrected, all of our idiot politicians paying lip service to “jobs” are just blowing hot air.....

I thought “research” was one of Obama’s top priorities to help jump start the economy.

I was in Winston last week and drove down old I-40 past the hospital. It’s been a few years since I was last by it and was amazed at all the recent additions that had been added.

The place is unrecognizable from it’s box-shaped, rectangular building that existed 25 years ago.

Heck, it has expanded quite impressively in just the past 5 years. Sadly, how we see it now is what it will look like about 50 years from now, with the exception of deterioration from weather/lack of maintenance, ect. It’ll be stuck in the 2010s, sort of like how Cuba is sort of frozen/stuck in the 1950s.
