The Petraeus Investigation’s Rogue FBI Agent Mystery (agent was Jill Kelleys's personal friend)
nymag.com/ ^ | 11/12/2012 | Dan Amira

The entire investigation began when Kelley "complained to an F.B.I. agent who is also a personal friend" about the e-mails she was receiving warning her to stay away from Petraeus, the Times reported. (An FBI agent is a good friend to have.) This agent then "helped get a preliminary inquiry started," one which would eventually lead to the discovery of Petraeus's extramarital affair.

Even though the FBI looked into Petraeus and Broadwell and found no evidence of crimes or security breaches, sometime in October this same FBI agent leaked information about the scandal to GOP congressman Dave Reichert of Washington (although why Reichert was chosen is unclear). Reichert then passed the so-called "whistle-blower" onto House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who did the responsible thing and relayed the concerns to FBI Chief Robert Mueller. According to a Cantor statement:

“I was contacted by an F.B.I. employee concerned that sensitive, classified information may have been compromised and made certain Director Mueller was aware of these serious allegations and the potential risk to our national security,” Mr. Cantor said in a statement.

The agent's outreach to these two Republican congressmen about an issue that had already been investigated by the FBI raises some questions. Over at The New Yorker, Jane Mayer asks them:

But what, exactly, was this F.B.I. employee trying to expose? Was he blowing the whistle on his bosses?

At last we learn why and how the FBI had been drawn into the loop.

If they melded “24” and “Desperate Housewives” into a single television series, it would look much like this.

Hey, didn’t they watch Goodfellas and learn from the experience of that guy they tried to feed to the lions? Don;t mess with someone who has a relative (or friend) working for the FBI!

Amazing how easily it is for the JonStewart media to get to the bottom of things when it suits their purposes. I am ‘stunned’ we in three days know with specificity who is who and who did and said what to whom.

Now that we have the background why General Pet resigned he isn't working and has plenty of free time to answer more important questions? I doubt his wife is all that interested in hearing his excuses about his extracurricular activities that got the FBI involved in her world.

LOL! Toss in “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

Sounds strange! Kelley and her husband supposedly are very close friends to Petraeus and yet, she does not mention this to Petraeus but goes straight to her FBI friend. Does not make sense?

That's where the facts end and the speculation starts!

Some early contenders:

Oh, for the love of Pete! How many different knots are they going to try and put in this pretzel? You need to be a contortionist just to get through the drek!

Anyone wanting on or off this ping list, please advise.

The thick plottens.... I smell a rat, big-time. Who is setting up Petraeus for a fall, and why? Ask: Cui bono?

The answer to the question of “Why David Reichert?” will surely be interesting.

Elected sheriff of King County, WA, law enforcement background and caucus member.

I have had the same thought since the beginning.

The best answer would be Kelley thought the emails were from an anonymous stalker uninvolved with and perhaps even unknown by Petraeus...or perhaps she suspected Petraeus' wife.

No. Does not make sense. Anyone would call the friend if they were in fact friends. No one would make their first call to the FBI if a friend was involved.

Your head is never in danger of being knocked off until it rises above the level of those around you.

This works for both Patreaus and Broadwell. The heads of others are just coming into view. The “personal friend” may be next.

Here's an interesting tidbit from the NYTimes...
The involvement of the F.B.I., according to government officials, began when Ms. Kelley, alarmed by about half a dozen anonymous e-mails accusing her of inappropriate flirtatious behavior with Mr. Petraeus, complained to an F.B.I. agent who is also a personal friend. That agent, who has not been identified, helped get a preliminary inquiry started. Agents working with federal prosecutors in a local United States attorney’s office began trying to figure out whether the e-mails constituted criminal cyber-stalking.

Odd. In some other accounts I had seen that the emails supposedly came from Petraeus' own account. Now they are anonymous.
