Stop the presses! Stop the presses!
The Washington Post's Bob Woodward on The Chris Matthews Show Sunday not only called Democrat visions of balancing the budget by raising taxes on the rich a "fantasy," but he also said "there is a way to...raise more revenue and perhaps lower the rates" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Bob Woodward Shocker: There Is a Way to Raise Revenue AND Lower Tax Rates
BOB WOODWARD, WASHINGTON POST: But there's a fantasy element, unfortunately, in this, about the tax increases for the wealthy. It probably is sensible, good policy. Its theology, as you know, with the Republicans not to do it, and when you look at the raw numbers, it's kind of only eight percent of the annual deficit. You dont get enough money, and if you go back to 2010 when it was Obama and Joe Biden who made the agreement with the Republicans to extend the Bush tax cuts.So I would not rule out him giving that just because you're not going to get that much revenue from it. And there are other ways to do it. And the idea that somehow you can put enough Republicans and all the Democrats in the House together won't work because the Democrats will not go along with significant entitlement cuts.
But there is a way to do it and raise more revenue and perhaps lower the rates.
Guess what? This is what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have been saying for months.
Is Woodward actually mellowing with age and starting to see the truth about how taxes actually work?
What was also interesting about this is it came as most of Matthews' panel including himself were predictably pushing for taxes to be raised on the wealthy.
As such, I don't often say this, but bravo Bob! Bravo!
grow the economy. less taxes, less regulation mean more jobs. each job takes a person from the 47% and puts them in the 53%. they go from a consumer of the govermnent to a provider thereof.
and what does obama do? everything he can to shrink the economy...
My guess is that Woodward is angling toward a “contributor” spot on Fox News in order to continue getting paid for what he does.
wow, mr woodward better report to a re-education camp PDQ
“Is Woodward actually mellowing with age and starting to see the truth about how taxes actually work?”
No. He’s a rich guy about to be taxed up the wazoo.
Bob, just call up King Bathhouse Barry and he’ll take care of it for you.
Dang, he’s a gazillion years old, isn’t he? I understood the Laffer Curve when I was 15.
Good post Kaslin...Poor old Bob Woodward thought he was making an original Observation.......
I’d take him in place of Juan Williams.
A one percenter who is starting to get worried.
So would I
What I want to know is, is there a way to get Skittles AND Unicorns?
Snarky comments on this thread are unwarranted.
As I recall, Woodward is from a Republican family. He is a Navy vet. Although partnered with another rookie reporter during the Watergate scandal, he has never exhibited the instability of Bernstein. As a reporter and author, he has never been politically affiliated, but he has written things that neither side like to read.
He has, for years, authored well-researched books and closely observed the workings of Washington. If what he says displeases one side or the other in a political issue, he draws brickbats from both. And that is most of the time.
He has weathered well and is often an interesting and informed voice.
He’s trying to “look” fair, so when he does something outrageously biased, he can’t be called on it.
