Panetta: DOD moved quickly on Libya consulate attack

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the U.S. military “did everything they were in position to do” about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya.

In a letter and timeline sent to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Panetta said the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate and nearby annex in Benghazi were over before U.S. forces could arrive.

As Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey has noted, “It was 9/11 everywhere in the world,” on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

Several hundred reports had been received about threats to U.S. facilities around the world, Panetta said.

Panetta initially said it was too risky. Why has he changed his story? Has he had enough time to reconstruct evidence to make sure no forces appeared to be in striking distance?He should just adopt the Obama model of explaining things, “we won, tough”. Seriously Mr. Panetta you don’t have to pretend this is a democratic republic anymore. We get it.

The State Department charters an old DC-3 in Tripoli (headquarters to numerous airlines) and flies it to Benghazi with some volunteers to help the Americans under attack. Leon, could you have chartered a plane and put some volunteers on it? Frequent Flyer Panetta....we’re at war and he flies home to California every weekend. Our Secretary of Defense. I want to hear from the head of the Air Force and the head of the Army and the head of the Navy and the head of the Marines about what was available to help Benghazi. Put them under oath. I don’t trust Panetta and I don’t trust Dempsey.

“did everything positioned to do” - panetta. With that quote Panetta is telling us all that there was no cross border authority granted by the only person that can grant it POTUS.

The only help that went to Benghazi was already in-country. The special forces well-trained for this mission were held back in Sigonella. they were held because the POTUS did not issue a cross-border authority order. The military cannot cross a border with hostile intent without approval from the president.

Potus said do everything possible - but did not grant cross border authority.

He also said:

“Armed UAVs, AC-130 gunships, or fixed-wing fighters with the associated tanking, armaments, targeting and support capabilities were not in the vicinity of Libya nor postured to an effective operational option during the timeframe of this attack,” he said.

So what does that mean? Double speak for nothing was in the vicinity because we didn't move it there, and no platforms were armed because we didn't arm them? I think this is all a show. R's probably approve of what Obama was doing. McCain and Graham after all were in favor of this intervention. It seems you could find out what was available out there outside of channels and then just ask Panetta point blank was there not x gunship or x drone at x location with x hellfire missles. They'll all walk.
