Republicans need to make Hispanics identify with their party based on common values. [...]

And there is common ground on the issue of family and several social conservative values. According to the Pew Research Center, while more Hispanic voters describe their values as “liberal” than the general public, they are more socially conservative on abortion and religious observance than the overall population. For even greater self-identification, a high-profile Hispanic candidate on the presidential ticket next time around wouldn’t hurt either. As columnist George Will put it, the real winner in 2012 may be the Republican senator from Florida, Cuban-American Marco Rubio, who is already being touted as a Presidential contender in 2016.

I think Obama’s support for gay marriage and abortion, as well as the poor state of the economy, likely dented his votes among several groups. Certainly the nine million fewer votes he received had to come from somewhere. In contrast, Romney would have won had he simply maintained McCain/Palin’s vote from 2008.

The problem was not Obama’s support for gay marriage, Obamacare and abortion. The problem was a lack of a conservative alternative in Romney, who at best was very “squishy” on social issues. Social conservatives simply did not trust Romney given his record.

To win in 2012, the GOP simply needed to pick someone more conservative than Mitt Romney. For some reason they failed to pull it off.

Another good point. I think a good conservative Republican could personalize this to the Hispanic community. Not by special laws, but by explaining how good laws that apply to everyone will help them in their communities. Hispanic mothers and fathers are no different than any other parents in that they want to know their children are safe and will have opportunities to advance in life.

I believe you are wrong factually on the natural born citizen thing, but it is least of the negatives regarding Marco Rubio. Rubio is fools gold for the GOP. Marco Rubio is not going to appeal to Hispanics anymore than Mitt Romney. Rubio has a fatal flaw in his appeal to Latinos, he is of European ancestry. His background is Madrid and Barcelona, not Sinaloa and San Salvador. He has no more appeal to the vast population of Hispanics as Paul Ryan does. Plus Latinos voted for Obama for the same reason everybody else did, for free stuff. The only hope in the long term for the GOP is the conversion of the white liberal. As the demographics of this country marches to its inevitable beat, life will become more and more like prison. In prison, a white liberal will make friends very quickly with those he shunned for the sake of staying alive. This dynamic will play out in the next decades in the larger society.

Why does California have Democrat/LIBERAL US Senators, governor and a boatload of congressmen?
