Federal Workers Want Pay Raise in Obama's Second Term
Breitbart's Big Government ^ | November 9, 2012 | Michael Patrick Leahy

Posted on 11/09/2012 11:22:20 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

With President Obama safely re-elected to a second term, federal workers feel comfortable to make their demands known. As debate rages over lowering the federal deficit, they want a pay raise.

As CNN's Money magazine reports:

[Union president Colleen M.] Kelley said her No. 1 issue right now is getting federal worker salaries unfrozen on Jan. 1, even if that means working out a deal later in the year and making pay hikes retroactive to Jan. 1.

In the midst of that, federal workers are also nervous about the fiscal cliff , which includes $1.2 trillion worth of spending cuts over a decade if Congress fails to act by Jan. 1. Some 277,000 workers -- 14% of the federal work force -- could lose their jobs in the next 12 months if the U.S. cannot avoid the cliff, according to a study by the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University.

A recent study by two scholars at the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation showed that the average federal employee currently makes significantly more than their private sector counterparts. As the authors wrote in the Wall Street Journal this past April, two additional studies supported their analysis:

When the public pay debate began to simmer two years ago, we were among the few analysts to show that many public employees—federal, state and local, including public school teachers—are paid more than what their skills would merit in the private economy...

There will be no cuts and federal workers won’t be fired but they will get a raise. All obama has to do is sign an EO and it becomes law. Then Bernanke prints money and they all get a raise. What they’re too damn dumb to understand is that they will get more dollars, but the dollars won’t buy as much. But, hey, they work for the government. They don’t have to be smart.

I know a nurse who moved here from England because he didn’t like working in their healthcare system. So, he votes for obama so he can have obamacare. He thinks health costs should be lowered.

These type people simply do not understand simple ‘rithmetic. I used to explain to customers who were trying to beat me down on the price. I would say “A well made widget costs $5 to make. It’s sold for $7. That $2 is what we call profit. So, if the cost to make it goes up but it’s still sold for the same price, the quality will go down and it will be an inferior widget. The other option is to either raise the price or close the business.”

It’s the same with healthcare. For costs to go down, quality will have to go down and wages for the healthcare workers, such as nurses, must go down. They don’t like it if you can get their attention long enough to explain it to them. Doctors, nurses, techs, venders, all will make less. And there will be lots of layoffs.

I can only guess that to be a democrat you have to have failed 7th grade math.

I propose that all of the top tier government employees, especially the SESers, take a 20 PER CENT pay cut as a show of solidarity with all the people who have just lost their jobs this week and all the others who will up through Jan. 1st.

That is the least they can do to “feel their pain”. My exceptions would be military leaders in the field, as well as Intelligence operatives, Embassy staff personnel, all military combat personnel (and their field logistics staff), and Military Policemen wherever they are.

Those in the government making over $150,000 can take a 15% cut back. It won’t hurt if you learn to eat Lean Cuisines once in a while instead of steak.

If the Democrats want real tax reform, let’s start with them.

Oh, by the way, for Hollywood moguls and high paid actors/actresses, it’s a 50% cut above what they already pay. Hell, they earn more in one movie than most of us earn in 20 years of honest work.

Let’s start with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Michael Moore, Harvey Weinstein, Whoopi Goldberg, etc. Let’s see how dedicated they are in “redistributing the wealth, their wealth.”

Waiting, waiting, waiting! Bueller, Bueller, Bueller!

A guy I know was at a gov’t construction site for the Monday morning meeting. The gov’t project manager was pleading (can’t demand or yell - the union would nail him for harassment) with his workers to work harder. “If you guys can just give me 4 good hours every day we’ll be back on track in 6 weeks!”. (They “work” four 10-hour days!) So out of forty hours a week, the manager has to PLEA for an honest 16 hours of work - and no doubt didn’t get it.

Hmmm. Sounds to me like the FED needs to lay off half their workers. Or more. Seriously.

A girl I know worked for social security admin. for 10 years and gets 3k/month retirement from it. She also gets s/s from other jobs. On top of this she is now filthy rich - just sold a 2.7M house which is only a portion of her real estate.
And...she and her husband are Obama supporters, think he’s done a good job, and I was told this week that she brags that they don’t pay taxes because she knows the loopholes.

Not sure how she justifies all this but doubt she loses a second of sleep over it.

Your health care analogy is flawed. You left out the large number of people to whom you need to provide “free” widgets when they show up at your counter...thus increasing the cost of the widgets for the rest of your paying customers.

Of course, that will NEVER be addressed...I’m still pissed at Reagan for signing that law back in the 80’s. Of course, it wasn’t entirely his fault...the law indicated that you ostensibly had to provide a basic no-frills widget. But NO, you decided to provide those who show up for free widgets with equal (possibly superior) product.

Sorry....LOL! I know that you are well aware of that, and the end result is the same...I’m just pissed.

Once again... The Federal Government has become a nation
state unto itself. It is NOT a government OF the people.. it
is a government wholly APART from the people.

It will rule us like a country that it has invaded and
conquered and occupied. It will confiscate as much money from
us as it sees fit to, just like war reparations.

We ARE NOT free. We are no better off than we were under
King George in 1776.

At this stage of the game the best thing that could happen is a complete collapse of economy, the dems would get credit for that, and we (the working people) would get the gubmint reset we so desperately need.

I know there would be much suffering, financial loss, and loss of human life, however, that is the quickest way back to freedom from here.

Like I said in another post, so far we’ve had several of the mega rich renounce their citizenship and leave the country to avoid the mega-taxes. I would too rather than allow communists to steal my money. I imagine this is going to happen or has happened much like people storming a door in a movie theater on fire, especially before the communists come up with a law to steal it even if they do renounce. So where is the admitted foreign born unconstitutionally elected Kenyan going to get all this money to pay his minions in our new communist government?

Pretty broad brush there, Terry: you might be surprised to learn that federal employees are pretty much a cross-section of the society they work for. Some smart, some dumb, and most somewhere in the middle. Most are thankful to have their job and are fearful of losing it when the train wreck happens. Many—most, even—are not supporters of the current administration. At least that’s so in the defense sector.

Amd most understand inflation as well as you do and decry Bernanke’s “QE2” BS,

They haven’t had a payraise since 2007 or so. I think a small 1.7 percent wouldn’t hurt. However, we need to get rid of 1/2 of them to pay for it. In the long run that would be worth it.

Especially Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt who have TWO actors in the family making tons of money. The only problem is that in both of these families, only one works at a time. When Brad is working, Angelina stays with the kids and when Angelina is working, brad stays with the kids. The same thing happens in Ben Affleck’s family, When Ben is working, Jennifer stays with the kids and when Jennifer is working, Ben stays with the kids. Ben turned down being in Homeland because it was Jennifer who was working.

While I understand the sentiments, I get a bit miffed when I see these stories because not all of us are the leeches that federal workers are depicted as (while many are leeches, not all of us fit the description). Many of us are no different than the rest of the work force. I’m retired AF and now a DOD employee. While I would love to not have had my pay frozen the past couple years, I’m one of the minority that understands that I need to be grateful for a job and I pay taxes the same as everyone else. I think we need to make serious cuts in the number of federal workers and only hope (like any sane person) that my job isn’t one of those that gets cut. I am a supervisor in a shop that trains our military to prepare them for their career. The folks that I work with are mainly hard workers with a solid work ethic. Our areas have taken on a bigger and bigger load and have less people to do the job - a few are being treated for stress and depression and we expect it to get much worse when sequestration triggers - I still want it to happen to induce as much pain as possible and start to wake people up, even if it results in me losing my job. I’m 60, but know I can find some way to make a few bucks and keep my wife in a home instead of moving into our cars. The problem is that we all get lumped into the same ugly pot as those who consider their pay to be a right even if they opt out of working for it.

Sad thing about Obamacare is that it costs more but will deliver much less. Health care workers will see themselves losing jobs and taking pay cuts. In the end they will be nothing more than glorified government workers providing services to people who despise them and feel entitled to their skill and labor.

I make enough to get by now that she is no longer working, and we have used it to foster/adopt three beautiful kids. Yes it would be nice to get paid a little higher wage, but I understand the times. Unless you are in law enforcement, a normal federal retirement is 30 years. Fed employees also have pretty normal health coverage. 30% of total premiums, 20% of bills, up to a family cap of $5000. Share things get expensive is in retirement. Fed employees keep thei medical benefits after retirement until they hit Medicare eligibility. An FBI agent is forced to retire at 57 and then draws his retirement check plus that medical benefit until he goes on Medicare. Nominally his retirement would be 34% of his last 3 years averaged.

“I believe God gave it to me after my wife was diagnosed with bone cancer.”

Friend, I’m sorry your wife got sick, and hope she’s on the mend.

But did you ever think about how God planned to pay for your military retirement and federal paycheck with the gold-standard healthcare that helped treat your wife?

What you are really saying is God smited the rest of us so that you could get paid two government paychecks.

No, the Constitution says I have the God-given rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You, and everybody else that gets a deficit-funded government paycheck are taking from people who pay for it all today, and the kids in the future who have to pay for all the spending that comprises your TWO government paychecks.

No, God didn’t give you anything. The overtaxed private sector allowed the bureaucracy to exist that gave you the job and multiple paychecks you now have.

your paychecks and government deficit spending are contrary to Gods inalienable rights bestowed upon every freedom-loving American when it takes what belongs to someone else.

Sorry friend, your windfall comes not from God, but from somewhere else.

Enjoy it while you got it. But God does not favor you keeping it if we who pay for it all fully claim what God has given us in America going forward.

I'm former military as well. A RIF in my office would be just as ugly as anywhere. It will be especially so as some old guys get riffed while younger vets and disabled vets get to stay. I have a 30% rating from the VA so me and a couple other guys in the office are pretty much bulletproof.

I really won't miss the guy in the cube behind me. He is pretty much just pulling down a paycheck. He does nothing and the only thing management does in response is slip him bad deals when they think they can get away with it.

Since that time I’ve lost 4 analysts to private sector jobs or retirement because they don’t want to work on Obamacare. I am doing the job of 3 staff, leading for two states, with a pay and hiring freeze that goes back to I don’t know when. Still, I am happy to have a job, a good one, I’m satisfied with my pay, and I would never ask for a raise. I don’t know who appointed this woman to be interviewed but she does not speak for me.

The hostility is on your end. I’m actually quite amused at the “God gives out government jobs” argument.

However, your shifting judgement of me is a sure sign of hostility - you’re shucking and jiving trying to sound like you are on the side of God. You are not. If you follow the Constitutional God-given inalienable rights, you’ll be closer.

If you believe God gives out government jobs, you have a little more Bible reading to do yourself.

LOL there you go again. Projecting your issues on someone else.

What God gave to one person has absolutely nothing to do with what He did or did not give to you. We all have the life we have because God calls us to holiness. How many times in the NT did Jesus tell his followers to stop looking at others, stop asking about others, and look only to the Father and themselves. Your first homework assignment.

No, this has nothing at all to do with this so-called government argument that is going on in your head with yourself. This is about putting God in a box and thinking you have Him and his plans completely figured out. Do you? I doubt it. Neither do I. For all we know the original poster in this thread you and I have begun is a man after God’s own heart.

“LOL there you go again. Projecting your issues on someone else.”

My issues have to do with Federal spending and our outsized government which infringes on the God-give freedoms we all have.

“What God gave to one person has absolutely nothing to do with what He did or did not give to you. “

God does not give out government jobs. Period.

God give each of us the exact same thing. Our founding fathers said it best that they include “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”

“This is about putting God in a box and thinking you have Him and his plans completely figured out.”

Our founding fathers nor do I put God in a “box”. What you don’t understand, besides basic economics, is that if God were to give out government jobs, for instance, that it would be contrary to the God-given inalienable rights repeated above. God does not contradict Himself.

God does not give out government jobs, because it would infringe upon the rights God has given to every American.

You’re not very good at psychology, theology, or economics, apparently. Are you a federal employee? That seems about the only thing you could possibly be qualified for after analyzing our exchange!
