Stars and Stripes ^ | November 8, 2012 | Matt Millham

Lt. Gen. Mark P. Hertling, the now-former commander of U.S. Army Europe, quietly departed Germany last week and retired days later at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. “Lt. Gen. Hertling’s decision to retire was a matter of personal choice... "The command didn’t alert the press to, nor issue a news release on its website, where Hertling’s official biography now says he “was” USAREUR commander from March 25, 2011, through Sunday.

I think the word we're looking for is putsch -- a short review of Russian history in the 1930's under Stalin will show multiple parallels, sans the actual blood.

I finally realized that a FaceBook friend from HS in the 70s is no smarter than she was back then when she proclaimed her support of The One just before the election. She did this in the face of having a daughter, son-in-law, and son on active duty in the Army and living in Eastern KY Coal Country. I have shown much restraint in not making FB posts of every coal company layoff for her attention.

Very, very interesting. Thanks for posting.

I never say “gays” unless it’s in quotes. Or just HOMOS.

When a Flag Rank officer runs afoul of the powers that be he is usually offered a court martial or retirement. Years ago my father told the Pentagon something they did not want to hear vis-a-vis force retention. He was given the above choices. He had two small children and could not afford to fight them. He was a doctor and it caused a major stink in the medical community. It almost killed him after 33 years of service.
