Mark Steyn: The Edge of the Abyss
National Review Online ^ | NOVEMBER 9, 2012 | Mark Steyn

The default setting of American society is ever more liberal and statist.

Amid the ruin and rubble of the grey morning after, it may seem in poor taste to do anything so vulgar as plug the new and stunningly topical paperback edition of my book, After America — or, as Dennis Miller retitled it on the radio the other day, Wednesday. But the business of America is business, as Calvin Coolidge said long ago in an alternative universe, and I certainly could use a little. So I’m going to be vulgar and plug away. The central question of Wednesday — I mean, After America — is whether the Brokest Nation in History is capable of meaningful course correction. On Tuesday, the American people answered that question. The rest of the world will make its dispositions accordingly.

In the weeks ahead, Democrats and Republicans will reach a triumphant “bipartisan” deal to avert the fiscal cliff through some artful bookkeeping mechanism that postpones Taxmageddon for another year, or six months, or three, when they can reach yet another triumphant deal to postpone it yet again. Harry Reid has already announced that he wants to raise the debt ceiling — or, more accurately, lower the debt abyss — by $2.4 trillion before the end of the year, and no doubt we can look forward to a spectacular “bipartisan” agreement on that, too. It took the government of the United States two centuries to rack up its first trillion dollars in debt. Now Washington piles on another trillion every nine months. Forward!...

Those living comfortably on gov checks will not work period. Most are as my father-in-law said too lazy to work in a pie factory eating 2 and boxing 1. They will merely sit with mouths agape when checks stop. Ask one where the money for those checks comes from. They have no idea!

“And the HDA and TSA would be his enforcers with all the ammo they have......”

Tell us poor dopes here how much military training these Rambos have and about all the battles they’ve won.

[ For the moment, tend to your state, and county, town and school district, and demonstrate the virtues of responsible self-government at the local level ]

Totally, totally agree with this!

You have obviously never been around Marxists. I had to read Marx. The Democrat leaders would like you to worry that they might be Marxists. A grifter gets you to look somewhere else while he’s picking your pocket. They’re getting you to think about socialism while they’re just picking your pocket.

Steyn's almost infallible sense of the right word failed him here. The accurate description is "deepen the debt abyss."

I read and stuided the CM. I know the left well. One has to be a fool to believe the followers are Marx want the "ideal state." Marx, Obama, Stalin, most of the RAT party are control freaks. They want to use the power of the State for absolute control. The old school has such power they could easily fill the evil blood lust and kill millions.

One of the benefits of such control is lots of "easy money." You could call Stalin a grifter of sorts -- he has nice Dachas in Abkhazia, Gagra and other places in the Caucuses.

I have no doubt there are many on the left who fantasize about having the same power as Stalin. The evil in their hearts is no less than the evil in Stalin's, Mao or Pol Pot.

Obama, Ayers, Soros, most on the left seek power not just for easy money. They are out to transform our Republic into a Socialist H*ll. Their end game is dictatorship.

Could be, but I think we need to understand their true motivation. If they just want power for power’s sake, then they’d be making us all have little red books and wear red shirts. They want bucks! Who wants to be Prince of Mozambique? Big deal. Princess of the US? You bet. They might accidentally destroy the US, and there are real communists and anarchists who would help them, but they don’t really want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs (the US). They just think that they are clever enough grifters to squeeze a few more eggs out of the old goose without killing it.

It’s government as a Nigerian e-mail scam, with Ben Bernanke playing the role of the dictator’s widow with $4 trillion under her bed that she’s willing to wire to Timmy Geithner as soon as he sends her his bank-account details.

It's just ink on paper. It doesn't mean anything.

If that’s all a bit too technical, here’s the gist: There’s nothing holding the joint up.

—— SNIP ——

Americans as a whole have joined the rest of the Western world in voting themselves a lifestyle they are not willing to earn. The longer any course correction is postponed the more convulsive it will be. Alas, on Tuesday, the electorate opted to defer it for another four years. I doubt they’ll get that long.

I truly think that if the American people understood our situation, they would have helped us stop Obama, all but the serious socialsts. The media and schools and colleges keep thm in the dark.
