President Barack Obama has thrown down to gauntlet to Republican leaders, inviting them to the White House next week to discuss the so-called fiscal cliff but insisting any compromise will include higher taxes on the rich.
A crisis is looming at the end of the year is agreement cannot be reached on how to avoid falling over the cliff - a scheduled combination of tax increases and spending cuts due at the end of this year.
‘We can't just cut our way to prosperity,’ Obama said in an event in the East Room in the White House Friday staged with what aides described as ordinary middle-class Americans arranged behind him.
‘We're serious about reducing the deficit. We have to combine spending cuts with revenue, and that means asking the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more in taxes.’ While not using the word ‘mandate’, Obama all but insisted he had a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy.
He flexed his political muscles, indicating he would use his enhanced power following his re-election in an electoral college landslide by strong-arming Republicans into raising taxes.
‘I’m not going to ask students and seniors and middle class families to pay down the entire deficit, while people like me making over $250,000 aren’t asked to pay a dime more in taxes. I’m not going to do that. ‘And I just want to point out, this was a central question during the election. It was debated over and over again. And on Tuesday night we found out that the majority of Americans agree with my approach.’

Let both sides compromise by splitting the difference down the middle.
The problem, as has been shown time and time again, is that these folks can pile on deduction after deduction and reduce their tax liability.
Things most Americans cannot do. So, since the money has to come from somewhere, the folks without all those deductions get shafted and pay more.
The people in our government are nothing but a bunch of selfish morons, republican and democrat, alike.
He's putting small business owners squarely in the crosshairs.
It’s going to interesting to see where he is going to get all these taxes when the rich start renouncing their citizenship and take off to Europe and all he’s left with are 100 million unemployed. Well 100 million is a little ridiculous, after all we are talking about Obama here....and all he’s left with are 200 million unemployed.

Europe's looking dicey. France--with Hollande? Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece about to implode. Switzerland probably won't have the average well-off person. Heck, rich Chinese are moving their funds here and to Canada (look at Vancouver real estate.)

I have never been anywhere the 1%, have had a negative net worth almost all of my adult life, and I still vote against this wealth redistribution. Not enough do, though, so, there it is. We get what we ask for. Sadly the majority wants theft.

What small business owners ought to say to the Won: “Read my lips, mr. socialist pigsh_t, I will lay off the rest of my employees and shut it all down. You got over $100K (whatever the number is) this year. You will be lucky to get 10K (whatever the number is) next year.”

I can’t agree with the notion of “mongrels,” they are just people; that has racial overtones.
What IS different is that many, most(?) have less appreciation and history for the Judeo-Christian values and ethics that our nation was founded upon. It is cultural, not racial. And it has been eroded. I don’t know if we can recover.
It is certainly my opinion that those who desire to immigrate legally, take citizenship classes, and wait and sacrifice to get here would tend to be far better Americans than those who don’t.
Why doesn’t he address the problem by making his entitlement class pay more?

For many in the top 2%, paying taxes is ‘voluntary’ as in they can decide whether or not to take profits now or in the future. Four years flew by, and if one can, they can maintain a ‘slow roll’ mode until the storm passes.
Dumb question: the “adjusted gross income” in this sense applies to married individual returns only or to corporate returns?
I am nowhere near a rich American, but when the screwing comes down I am sure I will get my share.
