Yayoflautas give out refreshments while participating in a general strike in Barcelona on March 29, 2012. (Oscar Martinez/Special to The Washington Times)
BARCELONA They occupy banks, stage sit-ins at government buildings and roar their rage at their own government and at German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
They also use canes and crutches to get to these so-called actions because their average age is 70.
These Spanish grannies and grandpas, part of a protest movement for seniors called the yayoflautas, say you are never too old for a revolution. The change they want is for Spain to slow down its tough budget cuts pushed by Germany and instead focus on growth and job creation to solve their countrys crippling debt crisis.
We dont want our children and grandchildren to inherit a society worse than the one weve lived in, said Paco Gonzalez, 60, a member of the group in Barcelona.

Too funny! First of all, these are Catalans, who hate the rest of Spain anyway and have always been extremely leftwing, even when the anarchists are trying to burn down Barcelona under their feet.
But aside from that, the etymology is a trip! The original word was “perroflauta,” which loosely speaking means “a person with a dog and flute (recorder),” because all the young loser lefties and anarchists used to appear on the streets of Madrid tootling on a recorder with a dog tied next to their begging bowl (they had found that the dogs got them more money).
“Yayo” is a Spanish colloquial term that means grandfather, equivalent to “Grampa,” so these are the elderly folks who are turning up now to supplement the young “perroflautas.”
I can’t figure out what they want to do. They say don’t cut spending, instead implement policies that favor job creation and growth but it’s not at all clear what those policies would be. Or are they just marching saying the equivalent of “well, do SOMETHING!”
I went. I saw. I was interested. But I will never go back.
IIRC America already has geriatric hippies.
Who is still dead...
Don’t forget spain counted our votes.....
RE “We don’t want our children and grandchildren to inherit a society economy worse than the one we lived in”.
Hey Grandma, that is what we conservatives have been saying here in America about Obama’s policies.
Why don’t you come over here and join us? Oh, you’re a leftist, communist, liberal? Nevermind!
Lol, I know what you used to read!
