Noticing the map and sections of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois that are connected and look almost solid blue, there's one thing they have in common: high populations of Norwegian-Americans. Oddly enough, a writer for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel looking at the same map arrived at the same conclusion I did. He titled his colum lutefisk vs. brats, Norwegians vs. Germans. Parts of the state with high German populations tended to go Republican. Parts of the state with high Norwegian ancestry tended to vote Democrat. I have Norwegian in-laws, and they're very vocal about how much they dislike Republicans.

It's funny because for many years western Wisconsin's third district had a Republican congressman named Steve Gunderson (a very common Norwegian surname) who was eventually outed by a homo org. They still re-elected him after he was outed. But after Gunderson left congress, the district has now been solidly Democrat. Maybe there is something to all those Norwegian jokes. Or maybe the Republicans should try to run a Norwegian-American all the time.

I am of Wisconsin Norwegian descent. The early Norwegians were strongly Republican because they were opposed to slavery. It’s only the later generations that have become Democrat and certainly not all of them. The two Norwegian-descended politicians who became known on the national scene were Democrats however. I am referring to Humphrey and Mondale.

I married into a Norwegian family. I can affirm your empiracles, and can further state that they are impervious to logic.

By the way, this is the same country overrun by the Nazi’s (i.e., they’ve seen how socialism ends up). This means, very much like the Jews, they are impervious to learning from either history or their mistakes.

Now, I’m Irish and Portuguese, so at this point, I have to put the bag of rocks down and by some new glass for the house I live in. My family in CA is all liberal. Everyone of them have government jobs, or retired from government jobs. My Norwegian family here - same thing, except one married a US Senator and then became a lobbyist, another became a tort lawyer.

My brother in law, is the only one in the family who actually works for a private company. He’s a beer and wine salesman. Hard worker, but he’s got huge issues, many of which stem from growing up in a house full of elitist liberals. My FIL is a teacher, then a union pres, then a professor. My MIL is a school nurse.

I don’t talk a whole lot at family functions. I love my wife, and I love my kids. I met her, frankly, during a time when almost nobody identified themselves with an ideology. The advice I have for my kids is that your ass tends to follow your head, so a person’s political ideology is likely more important than how good he or she is in the sack.

So, it's the Norwegians. And all along, I thought it was the Amish!

Most of the large blue areas in Arizona and New Mexico are Indian reservations. Utah too I believe. Indians vote Democrat. By and large.
