Could Romney run in 2016, following Nixon's example? (vanity)

(Putting on my flak jacket). Let me say that I'm no fan of Romney's politics, but the guy ran a decent campaign, and he appeals to swing voters in a way that Santorum and Palin cannot. And let's face it - what's he going to do with the rest of his life? If there's one thing he's got, it's time and money. He can learn from his mistakes, just as Nixon learned from his, and perhaps lead the GOP to victory in 2016.

Rick Santorum. Should have won this year, should run again in 2016.

Mitt needs something to do now...clearly he was shocked at how, late in the evening, the swing states dropped swiftly into the Poseur’s column. The greatest service he could do for the Nation now is to finance an in-depth investigation as to how this all went down. Let’s learn everything about how electronic voting can be toyed with to effect the count. Let’s get down to the statistics and historical voting patterns at the critical precincts in the swing states. Mitt is a patriot and could leave a great legacy by helping the Makers crack this nut.

You know, if the media/left is going to call any candidate we put up a “extremist,” then stop putting in moderates and put in a full-bore conservative and see what happens. Someone outspoken and brash. Of course, I don’t see one individual like that.

Seriously, in retrospect, and even at the time, Goldwater was nowhere near a Socon ~ had no interest in those theories and considered the concern a waste of time.

That's one of the major reasons he failed to rouse the troops ~ still, he understood there's no continuum in American political belief ~ there are just two great coalition polls of organization ~ one Democrat and one Republican, and they are always fairly evenly matched and can, in any given election, win provided they get out the troops.

LBJ, his fellow member of the Senate, picked upon on Goldwater's political organization views, adopted them, and beat him like an old rug in 1964.

Since that time Goldwater's then nascent belief has become fundamental to an understanding of group dynamics under the constraints of single member districts.

To be a modern Conserative you have to be a Fiscalcon, Socon, Traditionalist, and Originalist. Absent one of those values you will lose.

Romney was at best a polished politician who seemed technically capable at delivering speeches and performing during debates. No one particularly liked him, and few people were enthusiastic about him beyond the forced enthusiasm they could pretend so they didn't lose hope after settling for a liberal republican instead of a conservative again.

America's only hope, and it's a slim one, is a genuine conservative, and not just a policy wonk but a firebrand who can speak well to crowds and overcome the massive institutional barriers to any pro-freedom candidate communicating with the voters. My top choice teased us for too long before announcing that she would not run in 2012 - I wonder if she kept some good candidates out of the race. If she wants my support in 2016, she had better announce early and unambiguously. My other top 10-12 choices self-destructed, in part because they couldn't defend against Romney (which means they couldn't have defended against the far left media if they had won). Perhaps Ryan can make the case that it's his "turn" to the GOP establishment, while making the case that he has genuine conservative ideals and ideas when speaking to the voters. Otherwise, it would take a second civil war to bring our country back on track - and I still hope and pray that we will be able to avoid that risky option (not that a failed civil war would be that much worse than where we are now heading).

Reagan.

Reagan ran for president in 1968, 1976, and 1980.

Mike Pence. Newly elected governor of the state of Indiana. I’ve had my eye on him for quite some time. He reminds me of George Washington, for some reason.

I’d like to see Sarah and Alan West run eventually, but I’d like to see them in Congress, along with Paul Ryan, first.

Everybody has their own view. That’s mine.

If he stays in the national discussion and is able to run saying “see I told you so” in 2016, it is possible. If he disappears for 3 years, I don’t see it being possible.

Santorum would actually have a MUCH easier time in the swing states in the Gerat Lakes region, as it is much harder to cast Santorum as Richie Rich. Whether you like the "Rich Guy Bad -- Rich Guy Not One of Us" theme, Romney's type does turn off a lot of Reagan Democrat types. That was part of what scared the left so much about Sarah Palin.

In talking with Republicans from tea partiers to Rockefeller republicans - Palin, Bachmann , nor Santorum has a base of support.

Bachmann has been called Palin 2.0; Santorum called a Rah Rah Party type.

Who do we run next time? It is of course a proper subject for the moment but that fool in the white house is a fool of Biblical proportions and long before the next election we will have entered a time that will put World War Two in the shade.

There's a fine balance between Reagan and Goldwater. The problem we have is that both Reagan and Goldwater were better speakers and political thinkers than Santorum or Palin. And the Goldwater defeat, by 22.6%, and by 434 EV's, had serious down ticket effects. The Democrats gained 2/3 majorities in both houses, giving them the clout to push through the 1965 immigration act opening up mass immigration from the Third World that is still paying dividends for the Democrats today.

Walker ran as an ardent conservative in a blue state and won it twice. Romney ran as a moderate in said state and got his ass whooped. Walker’s got some skills.
