DENISON,TX--- One international company with local offices will be eliminating jobs.

Cigna announced November 1st that 1,300 jobs will be cut worldwide now through June 2013. A cigna rep says only a small number of these jobs will in Denison. He says most of the layoffs will occur in Europe.

"The largest impact in the United States is going to be in our home state, where our headquarters is, in Connecticut of about 200 people. Then all the other actions are going to be smaller and spread throughout all of our offices and operations throughout the United States," Cigna Corporation's Jon Sandberg said.

Cigna says they are cutting jobs in order to deliver more cost effective and efficient healthcare. Currently cigna has 35,000 employees worldwide.

I am a subscriber of Cigna's medication plan and I couldn't say enough about what a great company they are. First of all, their customer service agents are the very best I've ever had the pleasure of working with in any industry, trained to provide the highest level of customer service and professionalism I've ever encountered.

Secondly, I'm on various medications prescribed via Cigna some of which are quite expensive and they have been overwhelmingly generous in the medications they offer for approval, dosages prescribed, and the overall service, attitude in dealing with those whose lives, very functionality depend on medication.

Many of my doctor clients are Cigna providers and one of my fav insurance carriers to work with. Their call centers are open 24/7, although many are located outside the U.S. They also ignore a lot of the more ridiculous portions of the HIPAA related mandates. They did pick up business from Great West but all of our patients covered by their ex-pat program have been transferred to United Healthcare. I think down the road carriers like Cigna and Aetna are going to have trouble competing with United Healthcare.

State of Texas employee coverage recently transferred from Blue Cross to United Healthcare. Of course AARP is part of UHC. Don’t see anything positive coming out of this for anyone.

HCA awarded it’s national health insurance contracts back to Aetna. They had Aetna 2 years ago after dropping BC/BS Anthem...then went to Cigna then back to Aetna for 2013. HCA looks for “one stop shops” to service as much as possible for all their national facilities. I guess Cigna couldn’t come in with the cheaper price! Hence the loss of monies for Cigna and the job losses.

If it’s BC/BS of Texas, it’s not a bad group of people to work with, at least from my side of the picture. Lots of patient info crosses my desk and I don’t recall any of my docs ever seeing anyone from Ford so they must not cover many lives in Texas. Seems rather strange though. Cigna has a bad history of low premiums for a year or two and then really increasing them.

Was at a meeting with BC on Wednesday. No one there said a word about Ford coming on board and all tried to put on a good face about losing the State of Texas as a covered group but it has to hurt. One thing about those folks that work with BC in Dallas. Everyone I spoke with voted for Romney and was very worried about BO being elected. Over the years, everyone I have ever spoken with always says Merry Christmas. One of the case managers at United Healthcare that I spoke with last year in December complained to her supervisor who called my client. I wished her Merry Christmas. She didn’t celebrate Christmas so I asked her why. She complained I made her very uncomfortable. My client told the supervisor “too bad”.

I don’t know which BC/BS it will be. We have to decide before the end of the year which plan we want. In the past, we were covered by BC/BS of Michigan. We are salaried retirees, not UAW. It will be interesting to see how much more it will cost us.
