Asian Americans Overwhelmingly Backed Obama, Democrats
By Kim Geiger November 8, 2012 Much has been made of the Latino vote and its crucial role in boosting President Obama to victory, but it was Asian Americans who made the most dramatic shift in support for the president Tuesday.
Exit polls show that 73% of Asian Americans backed Obama, an 11-point increase since 2008. Asian Americans came out in such force for Obama that they topped Latinos as his second-most supportive ethnic group, behind African Americans.
Latinos, who made up 10% of the electorate, went 67% for Obama, 5 points higher than in 2008.
While Asians accounted for just 3% of the electorate – up from 2% in 2008 – their overwhelming support made them a key component of the Obama coalition, especially in swing states like Virginia, Florida and Colorado.
And their numbers are increasing rapidly. They were the fastest-growing ethnic group from 2000 to 2010.
“We are clearly an undeniable and unshakable political power,” said Rep. Michael M. Honda, a California Democrat and chairman emeritus of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. "As the fastest-growing ethnic community in the country, we are the margin of victory."
An election eve poll by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development confirmed what was seen in exit polls: 72% of Asian Americans backed Obama and 73% supported Democrats in congressional races. One-fifth were first-time voters.
Honda,, of San Jose, whose California district is now the first in the continental United States to contain an Asian American majority, said Asian Americans have become increasingly aware of their ability to influence elections.
“When people start to understand their worth, they participate,” he said.

Asians have strong families. Once a family member becomes an US citizen, they work to have the rest of their family join them in the United States. It is to their benefit to have their entire family united in the United States as citizens. The political party that will make that happen will get their vote.
How would you have Republicans explain their immigration position?
I hear all the time that the GOP has to “change the tone” of its immigration discussion, but I don’t know how they would have the party explain itself differently.
Let these various groups cut each other to pieces. It’s just a matter of time, as they utterly despise everything about each other..
My wife is a Filipina and many of her Filipina friends (but certainly not all) are conservative. But she’s from Cebu and born in Mindano (not the Muslim part!) which is generally a more conservative part of the country.
Filipina wives of American men generally tend to mirror their husband’s politics.
I’m a Jew, and the 70% that voted for 0bama can jump right off a cliff. Their idiocy is very burdensome to those of us who refuse the kool ade. Their true faith is liberalism, and this goes for liberal Catholics and Protestants as well. They have sold the American birthright of liberty for a foul bowl of pottage.
I did not vote for him and neither did my mom. I guess we are the 28% minority in a 3% minority. Don’t you know it’s the first and second generations that work hard and study, by the third generation they have been Americanized.

Corruption is another matter. It is almost everywhere. I guess it is left over from the Spanish, mostly, and went on steroids during the Marcos era — never diminished much after that. But there are good people trying to fight it.

This is what I wrote on another thread concerning the Hispanics. Substitute the word Asian anytime I use Hispanic:
"The Hispanic knows the Democrat will work to create a easy pathway to citizenship. There is a reason why Democrats want more Hispanic citizens. Democrats have found that they can easily buy the Hispanic vote with social programs loaded with freebies. It is a symbiotic relationship which guarantees huge numbers of Hispanics becoming citizens. The Hispanic uses his vote potential as political capitol. The Hispanic vote uses the Democrat politician for immigration reforms that will enable more Hispanics to become citizens and to get more freebies."

the GOP has an image perception problem with Asians. It doesn’t make sense — Asians generally are more conservative on average than whites. They should be a natural GOP votebank
depends on which Asians you are talking about — South Asians and West Asians more or less can pass for South Americans (and vice versa)
Probably because they're repelled by the WASP-y nature of the Republican party. High achieving whites with advanced college degrees are the same way.
Well, the same should be of people who are born in the USA -- third, fourth etc generations. Voting must be a privilege not a right

Why did 70% of the white Jews vote Obama, in that case? Asian voting (esp. Chinese and Indian) is influenced by university education, just like with the Jews. They see the Republicans as people who’d like to instate a theocracy if they could, and the media has been very successful in projecting the Republicans as people with an anti-science, anti-technology bias.
