Obama to make statement on economy Friday By Mark Felsenthal | Reuters – 48 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Barack Obama will make a statement on the economy on Friday, the White House said, setting the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans over contentious tax and spending issues.

The president is likely to discuss looming tax increases and government spending cuts - the so-called fiscal cliff - that would go into effect early next year unless Congress acts to prevent them. He is due to make the statement from the East Room of the White House at 1:05 p.m. (1805 GMT).

Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a race in which the two candidates offered different visions for jump-starting the sluggish economy, is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan.

Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff and try to cut the massive U.S. budget deficit. Analysts have said that if left unaddressed, the abrupt fiscal tightening would knock the economy back into recession.

Congressional Republicans have already begun to stake out their position on ways to spare the already modest economic recovery from a fiscal shock. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to hold a news conference earlier on Friday.

The president's advisers told reporters earlier on Thursday that dealing with the fiscal cliff would be an immediate priority. The administration sees Obama's re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said.

I think that Sarah Palin could strike a decisive blow if she were to give the unofficial Republican rebuttal first. Basically point out the Democrats utter fiscal irresponsibility, broken promises, threats, etc.

Harry Reid refusing to allow the senate to even hold budget hearings for four years, demanding that the Republicans pass endless continuing resolutions using the last W. Bush budget. Mr. President, are you going to order Harry Reid to stand aside so that congress can finally make a budget for you? That’s their job, you know, and only your man has stopped it from happening for four years.

The bottom line is that she can really tear Obama a new one, making his promises, threats, blame throwing, etc., sound stupid and patronizing. She could probably get a solid hour on FOX to do this and it would blow Obama’s schemes out of the water.

He promises cooperation and bipartisan spirit and issues this garbage... Krauthammer was right... “We heard all this before... he then called the republicans to the White House and said: “I won... you can sit in the back and watch”.”

"By the way, will our flag be strangely absent just like it was in the beginning of his first term?"

It'll be interesting to see if he bothers to wear a flag pin anymore since he's set for another four years. Remember early in his first campaign where he was questioned about not wearing a flag pin, and his response was: "I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.”

[ The administration sees Obama’s re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said. ]

The GOP House needs to say that they see their re-election as an endorsement of their position that higher taxes on business owners will only kill jobs, then tell Obama to go pound sand.

You make a good point. Always demonizing our side only helps the other side. We do that all the time. We give the left what they need to ruin us.

I dislike Boehner, but Obama is the real problem.

I guess not many are motivated here but I called my congressman who I think is RINO (just moved here) and let the staffer have it about Boehner (how he should go) and how I’m not giving up and how pathetic it was about how willing Boehner was to raise taxes. Of course, just silence and nothing from the other end.

It is one thing we can do, be a little crafty, maybe just to demoralize a staffer that their worthless RINO boss is part of the problem - worse than Obama - as someone said earlier here. Let that sink in.

Indeed he did.

Beck can blow his money. Me.. I’ve gone Galt.

Making just enough to get by and put a little away.

I ran the numbers, I can stay in the bottom tax bracket and be a 47%er. Pay none in, get none back.

If I really wanted to I could cut back so far as to get the EITC and get some of your money back.

I am happy to just cut off the 5,000-10,000 the beast use to get from me.

I’ll still live well. I’ll trade my services for what I want.

I suspect the barter and black markets will start to grow once Zero gets all his tax hikes in.

I’ll watch for it. This talk of a new bipartisanship is bullcrap. That fallacy will last about a week then 0bama will go FULL-ON DICTATOR. He’s about to double-down hot and heavy and the GOP will be powerless against 0bama’s ‘mandate’ myth. The media will continue to whore themselves for the black man so as not to appear ‘racist’. That phenomenon alone has killed America. 0bama isn’t treated equal to anyone; No one could get away with what he’s done.
