The Election and the Right [Good Analysis With The Stats We Have Now]
National Review ^ | 11/8/12 | Yuval Levin

As we seem to be well into the “if only they had done what I would have done” stage of post-election analysis, I’m happy to admit that I believe that if the Romney campaign had offered a more coherent agenda and case regarding our economic predicament and positioned it within a broader argument about the nature of American life they could well have had far more success...

First of all, the figures we have so far (even acknowledging that the exit polls were incomplete and imperfect, and that there are still some votes here and there to be tallied) suggest to me that the story of this election is not massive turnout of the Democratic base but exceptionally depressed turnout of a portion of the electorate that, when it votes, tends to vote Republican. Those were after all the two parts of President Obama’s cynical and substance-free campaign strategy: to work the most intensely committed and reliable parts of his base into a frenzy while persuading the least committed and reliable part of the Republican base (white working-class voters) that Mitt Romney didn’t deserve their support so they should just sit it out. Much of the post-election analysis has focused on the sophistication of the former effort—finding every last tiny niche in the patchwork of clamoring interest groups that makes up the Democratic coalition and telling it exactly what it wanted to hear. But the election returns suggest the latter effort—using any low and mendacious tactic required to tell working-class voters (especially white, Midwestern ones) that Mitt Romney was an evil and uncaring plutocrat—was by far the more successful and important. Those voters were not going to support Obama, but they could be kept away from Romney, and evidently they were.

Yuval gives props to the Tea Party...its presence in 2010 allowed Republicans to gain enough of an edge to keep the House through this cycle.

For your thoughts....God bless.

IMO we were defeated by the press. If Sandy had been reported 100th as much as Katrina and Benghazi had been reported 100th as much as Iran Contra then Obama would have been toast.

I think that a lot of those in the “republican” camp were looking for something or someone or a policy THAT WAS CONSERVATIVE to vote for.
They couldn’t find any.
They stayed home.
Three MILLION or so.

Ya think kicking Conservatives in the nuts all the time JUST MIGHT NOT be the best policy?

Yes...the press was pretty much in the tank...but the truth is...Romney is no conservative “severe” or otherwise. This is a liberal guy from Massachusetts...who was for abortion before he was against it.

He would be a lot better than Obama...but likely would just have pushed the coming crash back a year or two.

Maybe Gingrich would have lost too...but it would have been a fun and wild ride.

No one will ever convince me that Romney lost because not enough people voted for him.

The evidence of the hoardes of people that went to Romney rallies ALL OVER America...in the tens of thousands, even being turned away from events, not to mention the Exit Poll figures and how it showed votes for Romney/Republicans were up and votes for Obama/Democrats were down, just makes me believe even more that this election was lost, because it was STOLEN.

I fully believe the votes were rigged. The Democrats KNEW and were WAY over confident they had this election in the bag, when they should have been shaking in their shoes.

And look at ALL the reports of voter fraud (which makes one wonder about the fraud NOT reported). Voting machines were rigged to vote Obama, when Romney was chosen. Or they counted 2 votes for every Obama vote. Or they had people bussed in that don’t even live in this country. ALL the illegals Obama let in on their temporary workers permit. ALL the illegals that didn’t have to show proof of ID or residency, or citizenship, for that matter. All the Unions and Thugs completely disregarding Polling station rules. Ballots being lost or “misplaced”. And the military votes conveniently arriving after the election and won’t even be counted now....

From THE MOST corrupt administration, hell bent on destroying the USA and pushing their NWO Globalization agenda, I believe wholeheartedly....they stole it. There is no reasonable, logical, rational, factual way he won fair and square. And IMO, less voter turnout is the least of why he won.

One of the most upsetting stat is that voters by and large didn’t blame Obama for the horrid economy. I blame (of course) the reporting on this. There is a research paper (can’t remember where I read it), that studies the nature and tone of economic reporting by TV and newspapers and compares the verbiage, headlines, etc. When there is a Republican in the WH, things are always painted in a very bad light. A Democrat in the WH? Words like “unexpected,” and “surprise,” etc. Never any blame to the man in the Oval Office if it is a Democrat.

OK, who was the 'real conservative' running this time?

Perry? Gingrich? Cain?

All of them flamed out for their own problems, not because they were 'too conservative.'

Santorum? Bachmann?

Sontorum is a social conservative but if you look at his voting record no way is he a true conservative. Bachmann has foot in mouth syndrome. If she had won the nomination we might have seen an Akin/Mourdock moment or two.

How about the upcoming crop?

Rubio? Jindal? Christie?

Maybe Jindal but Rubio is pushing his DREAM ACT, which is poison for me. After Christie's performances with Obama and Springsteen I think the guy is mentally unstable.

So the pickings are pretty slim for true conservatives but I am open if they step up to run.

I blame (of course) the reporting on this.

Some biz-school marketing prof published a book on news media bias and decided that this gives the Rats a 5-6 percentage points advantage.

But that is only part of the RAT advantage. They also totally control the entertainment industry and the colleges. This gives them the huge advantage they got with the youth vote.

So it is along uphill fight. We have to fight it I pray that the US has enough time left before it implodes but it is going to take decades.

The long article seems to say that it was working class whites who stayed home by the several millions, that Romney failed to connect with them, and also that all the rich guy, vulture capitalist ads run against him did damage with this group.

They might also consider how the Tea Party, and Sarah Palin, were made unwelcome at the convention. As is often the case, the party bent over backwards so far to avoid offending the 'moderates' that they ended up offending millions of their loyal base.

That might be the biggest factor in the loss, among others, but the elites and snobs will admit that. They're incurably obsessed with the Latino vote and the need (according to them) for amnesty.

I think those who spewed the landslide for Romney hurt. Here’s why: The 2 college professors from CO who predicted 300 or so EV for Romney, Dick Morris and his idiot reporting - maybe people thought Romney had it in the bag and stayed home thinking he didn’t need their vote. Also, the O camp took to fraudulent methods to win the swing states that Romney had leads in during the polling.

Something isn’t right here and no one will ever convince me he won fair and square without cheating.

I wholeheartedly agree. Here’s a stat to think about. 57 Million people voted for Romney on Tuesday. 60 Million voted for McCain in 08. Can anyone with half a brain believe that? That only leaves manipulation as the culprit. But then why would this surprise anyone? I say let the MSM and the Progs yell sour grapes all they want the Republican hierarchy needs to get off their Christies and start investigating.

Yea I know add it to the long list off investigations that Boehner and company should be doing. Well I came over to the Repubs the last 2 elections after voting Libertarian since 1977. I have voted for a few individual Republicans over the years but this was it for me. I don’t know what Party I’ll vote for next time. I’m still a Libertarian at heart but the Party seems to have been overrun with liberals over the last few years. But then with the “fix” in for the Dems I guess it really doesn’t matter.

Yes. If the media had handled all of that as if bush was in WH then romney would have had a victory - not landslide - because of the entrenched dems. That’s why I say we only have a sliver of independents we can affect who are brainwashed by the MSM.
