All Five Constitutional Amendments Soundly Defeated - (Labor loss in Michigan)
Mackinac Center ^ | November 7, 2012 | Ted O'Neil

Posted on 11/08/2012 9:17:29 AM PST by re_tail20

All five constitutional amendments in Michigan were soundly rejected by voters Tuesday, including two that received heavy union backing that would have locked collective bargaining for government union employees and a dues skim that has taken $32 million from Michigan’s most vulnerable residents into the state constitution.

“Today, the voters of Michigan sent a clear message,” Labor Policy Director F. Vincent Vernuccio said of the Proposal 2 defeat. “The voters put workers, taxpayers and job creators above special interests. Michigan avoided making government unions a super-legislature that would have the ability to effectively veto laws passed by our elected representatives. The move also allows reforms to continue that will save taxpayers a projected $1.6 billion annually.”

Vernuccio also noted that with President Obama the projected winner at 53 percent in Michigan and Proposal 2 being defeated with close to 60 percent of the vote, this shows that many Democrats voted against labor’s interests.

"The defeat is a major setback for organized labor across the country and further shows that the reforms in states like Wisconsin and Indiana were not a blip, but a national trend that is gaining momentum," he added. “This is a sea change and shows that unions can't assume that Democrats will rubber stamp their agenda.”

Proposal 4, a scheme that would have allowed the SEIU to continue taking $6 million a year from family members who provide home-based care to loved ones, was also soundly rejected.

“Home health care options and a registry and training for care providers was not the issue here, but the SEIU chose to attach them to the poison pill of forced unionization and also attempted to preserve their scheme in the state constitution,” said Patrick J. Wright, director of the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation.

Seriously, what in the hell is the point any more? We are about to be inundated with Executive Orders and administration maneuvering that will put the final nail in the coffin of the Constitution. What does it matter about Wisconsin or Michigan or any of those places? It’s Muslims, Democrats and minorities. Those people that are conservative had just better move someplace else because there ain’t nothing there no more.

Why should we leave Michigan when 95% of the state’s territory votes conservative?

Hell find someway to cede Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw to those morons in Ohio.

I would have liked to see the emergency manager law stand. ended up voting yes on prop 5 (taxes) but wasn't really concerned 1 way or the other. That said, crushing the union proposals and green energy mandate made for a nice consolation prize.

While I don’t understand (and can never forgive) Michigan voters pulling the lever for Obama and Stabenow in 2012, I was pleased that they shot down the most dishonest ad campaign ever perpetrated - from the Detroit Free Press:

Voters have soundly rejected Proposal 6, the proposed constitutional amendment that businessman Manuel (Matty) Moroun pushed to delay or block the planned New International Trade Crossing bridge between Detroit and Windsor.

With 94% of the state’s precincts reporting, Proposal 6 failed 60%- 40%. A survey of select precincts around the state reported a similar margin of defeat, as did an Election Day poll of 800 actual voters by EPIC-MRA.

With 4796 of 5099 precincts reporting as of Wednesday morning, the count is 2,570,148 votes against the proposal 6 and 1,743,120 in favor.

The defeat marks a stinging rebuke to the 85-year-old Moroun, and makes it more likely that the NITC project backed by Gov. Rick Snyder and Canadian officials will now proceed unimpeded. Moroun’s committee spent more than $33 million on its Proposal 6 campaign, smashing the state record for the most spent by one side on a statewide ballot initiative.
___
NOTE: Mouroun’s ads showed teachers and first responders suffering job cuts due to this proposal when no US dollars are involved. This bridge crossing is 100% funded by Canada.

We’re leaning more conservative every year. Fortunately the liberals are fleeing for warmer places like Georgia. LOL

I can understand your frustration and the attitude of some of us outside Michigan, but unfortunately 95% of the territory doesn’t translate into an overall conservative win because of the infestation of your major urban areas.

It’s the same with California, New York, and a dozen other states. If you can’t enact a regional delegate structure where EC votes are proportional to territorial representation, then we’ll keep losing because of the urban roaches. The only alternative ptherwise is to abandon those areas and leave the roaches to their own devices.

The final option is to force a residency fee on entry on those states still worth it. A fee that lowlifes can’t pay.

Whatever you think about what’s going on in Michigan now wait until half your industry tries to relocate to the Goshen/Mishiwaka Super City ~ which is what it will turn into with Right to Work in Indiana and Captive Nations in Michigan.

I’m with you on Maroun. That guy makes bottom feeding scum look good.

First he claimed there’s no need for another bridge and finally settled on claiming that he wanted to build a second bridge (never mind the fact that Canada won’t let him build another right next to the first). Then he and Kwame Kilpatrick got caught conspiring to seize control of the tunnel. He also conspired with ACORN to put fake eviction notices on all the doors in DelRey to convince people that the state was kicking them out. That last stunt kind of backfired because a lot of people realized that they’ll get a better deal selling their homes under eminent domain than they’ll ever get on the open market. (DelRey is about as bad as it gets in Detroit)

As far as the cost is concerned, we do have to pay for the land on this end of the bridge but that’s because federal law prohibits Canada from buying it. In any case, its a spectacular deal that will actually produce revenue for everyone involved except Maroun.

I resent you calling Ohioans morons. Romney would have won the state if it weren’t for Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) These large cities are killing our country.

However, the unions prevailed in OH in overturning the collective bargaining bill passed by our legislature. For that - the people in OH are morons. Having said that - the Republicans did very little in getting the truth out to the people of OH. They think teachers - good. cops - good - firefighters - good. They are clueless in understanding that they pay these people’s salaries and benefits which are more than what they make.

No, it’s true. Things like the cap on previously-endless cash welfare are driving the indigent-lifestyle crowd out of MI and into one of the few states still offering lifetime freebies.

Rick is actually getting business back in MI. That means jobs. People who work in jobs (often) get sick of liberal policies that steal their work, and means fewer welfare rats.

MI is, finally, turning. The remaining cancer is Detroit, which I still think should be walled off “Escape from New York” style.

If it’s lowlifes coming here, then we don’t want them. If they’re conservative that’s a different story, but you can’t have it both ways, i.e., turning more conservative there and exporting your trash here....we won’t have it.

The final option is to force a residency fee on entry on those states still worth it. A fee that lowlifes can’t pay.

There's a simple way to do that: withdraw from all state-administered welfare programs. Just eliminate them all. If there are no benefits, then the low-lifes won't come.

How long would Detroit stay a Dem hell-hole if Michigan refused to subsidize it, and people there were given a choice of work or starve?

I’d say we’re less than 10 years from becoming a right to work state. There are even groups like the union conservatives pushing for it. In fact a good many union people had to vote against the pro union proposals to beat them they way we did.

Election night, I opted to watch a few DVR’d programs instead of following the count-by-recount of the downfall of this country. They were three episodes of “The Walking Dead.”

I found them remarkably similiar to real-life today, only we aren’t free to shoot the zombies in the head yet.

CrippleCreek - I am heartened by Michigan as the concerned citizens have shown that once you hit bottom - voters will gladly take the pledge. I don’t believe that Republicans nationally need to morph into the “outreach party” at all. Rather, we need to hold our principles dear and stand our ground, so when the dark blue states (first) and then the nation hits the wall in an epic financial collapse - responsible Republicans will be there to clean up.

I have properties and business ties in California, but I hope to change my tax and voting home as soon as I hit the magic 188-day mark. California is about to hit bottom and the voters will beg for a Republican to save the state when all hope is extinguished.

Maybe we should fight the Toledo strip war again. If we take a fall, maybe we can trick them into winning Detroit.

Michigan and California are going to be an interesting experiment. We started in similar circumstances but are now heading in different directions. It should be very interesting to see how different they are in 10 years.
