GOP Turns Sure Victory into Defeat
http://townhall.com ^ | November 8, 2012 | Michael Reagan

Wait until next year -- 2016, that is.

That’s what disappointed Republican spinners kept saying Tuesday night as they watched Mitt Romney’s hopes crash and burn in swing state after swing state.

How many times did I hear a Republican talk about how their party’s deep bench of future all-stars will return it to power in Washington in four years?

But all the Ryans, Rubios, Bushes, Haleys and Christies in America can’t put the GOP -- or the country -- back together again.

The GOP is a wreck -- and not just in California, where the party’s registration is now below 30 percent.

Look how easily the Republican Party managed to turn what should have been a sure victory over an incompetent and dangerous incumbent into an embarrassing defeat.

First they tore each other to shreds in a bitter primary, smearing their eventual nominee in debates as a rich, uncaring profiteer who put working people out on the street and shipped their jobs overseas.

Then, while Obama’s ads in the battleground states reinforced the Republican-made caricature of Mitt, the Romney campaign did just about everything wrong

Reagan has a point. In reality the only republican running that even knew Reagan was Newt Gingrich. But remember when Willard mocked Newt and said he had read a book by Reagan and Newt was only mentioned one time. In otherwords Willard called Newt a liar. In retrospect Newt Gingrich was the only republican running for president that stood a chance against Obama. Newt would not have sat back and let his reputation be destroyed from Obama, without fighting back. He would have also been on talk shows the last month of the election, not hiding from the media. He would have also hung Bengazhi around the communist's neck, and not given him a pass.

The primaries were horrible.

Americans agree with us on fiscal issues. Social conservatives make it tough to pivot to the general election. Single women bought the lady parts bs and philosophizing about rape didn’t help.

Agreed. This is an issue that has to get resolved before the next elections. How can this be reconciled? I don't think it is resolvable. A 3rd party option would only split the vote and end up in Dem victories. I don't know the answer to this, but until the party figures it out, we are doomed to losing. I don't believe we can continue to think of evangelicals as our base.

Selecting Romney in the primaries was assited by the Demodummies when they too were allowed to vote for a REPUB candidate.

Herman Cain has the right idea..”Time for a new party”.
Well Herman, I’m all in.

I want to see this number broken down by party affiliation, which it NEVER IS. No way in hell do I believe that a republican voting woman voted for the communist for president. They think with head brain, not with their sexual parts.

Demography is destiny. Reagan’s America now exists only in history books.

After the coming amnesty adds another ten million welfare Rats, the Rat lock on elections will be even stronger.

This is not a swing of a political pendulum, but demography in action.

Romney was doing fine until he backed down on Libya. He should have met Obama’s bluff destroyed Obama’s credibility by publicly calling him a liar for weeks on end.

Romney couldn't handle the level of dishonesty by Obama.

Obama was so vulnerable to having his credibility destroyed. Romney was too nice to do it.

Look at the numbers: Obama dropped from 69 million votes to 60 million votes. McCain had 59 million votes in 2008. With Romney being a more attractive candidate, much better financed, good in the debates, supposedly popular with independents and running against an incumbent who had screwed up the economy and made a number of foreign policy errors, it should have been very easy for Romney to garner an additional million votes to put him over the top. So why did he come in 2 million votes below what the pathetic McCain was able to garner in 2008?

This was the poll number that most of us - and pundits like Rush and Dick Morris - couldn’t understand: why were polls showing a significant advantage for the Dems over Republicans in the polling samples? How was it possible that the Republicans would still have a significant turnout disparity over the poor results of 2008? Simple. Romney turned off the base of the Republican Party. I firmly believe that most conservative political activists showed up to vote for Romney, even if they had to hold their collective noses, because they wanted to defeat Obama. Unfortunately. the same cannot be said of the average conservative voter who showed up in droves in 2010 to “throw the bums out”.

I firmly believe that there were several millions of usually apathetic voters who were energized by the Tea Party in 2010 to get off the couch and vote, but who stayed home in 2012. Not because the Tea Party sat on its hands, but because they did not believe that Romney would do anything to reverse Obama on Obamacare or spending. Romney didn’t connect with these marginal conservative voters, even though the core of Tea Party activists ended up actively supporting Romney in the campaign. And I suspect a certain segment of Ron Paul’s libertarian support also stayed home.

Obama had a massive drop in turnout and support from his base. All Romney had to do was keep McCain support and grow that support by about 3% and he would have won. The fact that he was unable to do that with all of his resources shows just how much he failed to connect with many of the average voters who showed up to the polls in a rage in 2010. Still think that marginalizing the Tea Party was a great idea?

of the commercials I saw for Romney :

none of them showed videos of Obama saying “if the economy doesn’t turn around in 3 years – it’s a one term proposition”

none of them showed Obama saying to Mevedev on missle defense “ This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”

why was this not pushed? (or was it as I only saw national feed commercials for president as I live in a solid blue state)

managed to turn what should have been a sure victory over an incompetent and dangerous incumbent into an embarrassing defeat.

Anyone who thought the GOP was headed for a sure victory was suffering from severe head in the sand (or another place) disease. What changed for the Kenyan?

  1. Blacks voted for him because he is black. Nothing else even registered on their radar. Well he didn't change race between 2008 and 2012.
  2. The wealth envy crownd voted for him because they wanted to see the successful punished. His "ask the rich to pay a little more." crap was right up their alley
  3. The parasites grew fat with their 0bamaphones and the removal of any work requirement for assistance and he swelled their ranks by 17,000,000 on EBT cards alone in the last four years so that was an addition to his base
  4. Plus incumbency
  5. Plus the MSM was totally in the bag for the arrogant stupid a$$hole
Michael Reagan is a fool if he really thought the GOP was headed to a walk away victory. Actually I've kind of thought he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer for a long time and this article does nothing to dispell that impression.

And we’ll still get more.

I think a lot of weight has to be given to incumbency.

Incumbent politicians have wet dreams about opportunities to look like leaders during a natural disaster. Romney had no choice but to stand down while Obama role-played himself as commander-in-chief in New Jersey.. a moment that shoved the gathering scandal of Benghazi off the front pages just as it was beginning to inflict damage. Many FReepers argued with me on this point, but it proved out... Many Americans — especially on-the-fencers — respond positively to images of presidents appearing to take charge, regardless of who’s in the White House. And photo ops like these are exponentially more powerful and valuable than any images a campaign can buy.

We were dealt a bad hand here... the timing of that storm was.. .well, a “perfect storm” of opportunity for Obama. Romney still had momentum up until that moment. I was hoping and praying Sandy would drift off into the Atlantic, but she landed at the most inopportune time for us. And that helped Obama immensely.

Newt was a staking horse for Romney. His job was to ensure that no other Conservative could accumulate enough support to defeat Romney in Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio. Which is exactly what happened.

After Newt got blown out in Florida, he was done.

We have to start somewhere. What we are doing isn’t working. I guess we can keep th 3rd party issue in the back room and continue to send Rino’s out to be defeated.

What would the outcome have been had we had a 3rd party this time? The GOPe would have still blamed - THE CONSERVATIVES - for their failure.

Newt would have lost handily, but he would have made a mockery of Obama in the process. In hindsight, since Obama won anyway, that would have been the way to go. We just didn’t have a candidate this time. Newt’s personal life has been a train wreck, and it would have killed his candidacy in the general election. Maybe one of these governors will be ready in four years.

You mean the votes Palin was able to garner in 2008. She was and is a rock star with a huge following, particularly in that election. If someone like Pawlenty had been the VP nominee in 2008 I'd bet anything that McCain/Moderate would have way less votes than Romey/Ryan. But McCain/PALIN beat Romney/Ryan because the base didn't turn out in 2012 like they did in 2008. There it is.

The mid-terms are extremely important. The Dems will go all in to win back the House and paint the Republican House as the main obstruction to “fiscal recovery”. If we’re not careful, we’ll end up like California with Dem supermajorities in House and Senate. Then we are truly screwed.

When will the GOP learn that every time they shove a RINO down our throats, we sit at home on election day, it happened in 2008 and again in 2012. Run on conservative ideas like in 2010 and you win in a landslide, run a RINO and you lose. When they figure it out they will start winning election again. But if anything they think Romney wasn’t a big enough RINO, now they think the only way they can win is to run a social liberal female half-black, half-hispanic lesbian or some such nonsense.

I don’t know if I can get emotionally invested in another Republican candidate that is lukewarm. I don’t think I will. The primary was brutal but necessary. Romney was nasty in the primary but nice guy in general election. I want a conservative that is not ashamed. Ryan was not ashamed to explain himself and he was good at it but seems they muzzled him? Rubio was my pick for VP. Tired of namby pamby moderates and know it all pundits. So Tired. And Ann Coulter should not sell another book because I am thinking she is a fraud. And get ready men.....she is NOT that pretty. Without her long hair she would look very angular and harsh. Not that that matters but it seems to be part of her illusion. She has written sarcastic books that conservatives have lapped up and it is just money making for her. I stand with Mark Levin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I supported Newt, I voted for Newt, Newt would've been brilliant except he'd have lost the women's vote even more than Romney. Unfortunate but true.

Romney was our best shot; I think he waged a formidable campaign against a well liked, "historical" incumbent known for fighting dirty. When most voters say they blame Bush for the economy rather than the man on the ballot and you're from the party of Bush and are being characterized as wanting to return to those policies, an already weary and afraid electorate is not going to take a chance even if they loathe the direction the country is going in.

At the end of the day, I still believe John F Kerry or John McCain with Obama's record would have had NO CHANCE for reelection.

With this election, the GOPe has well and truly lost their 'nose-holding' base ..... fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. No more GOPe wins in the future because I don't think they'll change course (already people are throwing Jeb Bush's name around so that tells me all I need to know). "Avoiding a greater evil" as a reason to vote for poor moderate, squishy candidates won't turn out the base in the future - evil is already here.

I just heard two-thirds of voters said the hurricane was a factor in their votes; 43% considered Obama's response.

Social conservatives make it tough to pivot to the general election. Single women bought the lady parts bs and philosophizing about rape didn’t help.

The worst of it is we aren't talking about mainstream social conservatives.

We're talking about extreme elements who want to hear about their faith-based beliefs with every breath, are unconcerned about electability, unconcerned about a person's record (Santorum confirming Sonia Sotomayor, for example). As long as the candidate sounds like a preacher more than a president, they're in.

They have become their own worst enemy and Todd Akin is a prime example. He irrationally believed his nomination was providential, that he couldn't lose to McCaskill even after his rape comment. These people attack anyone who wanted Akin to step aside as RINOs, GOPe, abortionists, etc. And I mean everyone, no matter the persons solid credentials.

Then we have Mourdock weighing in on rape as well, saying it's God's Will which is music to the ears of the people I refer to above.

Both Akin & Mourdock lost easily winnable U.S. Senate seats in states Romney won with 300K-500K more votes than either man.

These people harm their causes, give life to the stereotypes painted by Democrats and drag others down by association.

Rush Limbaugh is responsible for some of the biggest image Republican problems in recent years. He helped cost us this election. His "slut" battle with Sandra Fluke gave life to the "War on Women" which helped define this race for women.

You can't win the GOP nomination, how will you win nationally ?

Where will you find your voters ?

What are you going to do, start a Tea Party? How's that worked out for one-and-done Allen West or various senate candidates like Akin, Mourdock, O'Donnell and others... easy wins that were thrown away?

But wait, you don't even want a real Tea Party because the actual Tea Party movement is SILENT on social issues.

The communist got MORE BLACK VOTES than he did in 2012! In otherwords where were all the black pastors and their flocks that said they wouldn’t vote for him when he came out for queer “marriage”. Answer: They don’t exist. Blacks vote racist. They voted for him because they think he’s one of them, makes no difference at all that he was raised by affluent muslims and whites and has absolutely nothing in common with the black man in America. The vast majority of blacks are too dumbed down by the democratic party to realize that. The ones that do have a mind of their own and call the communist for what he is are labeled uncle toms and belittled by 99% of other blacks. Skin color trumps everything else for these people. Well I should say skin color and being a welfare daddy leftist. They could care less if the fake and fraud now claims it’s OK for two men to get “married”. As long as that welfare check and free cell phone keeps coming in he has their vote.

Focusing only on economic issues is where we win the majority of voters. For now.

Four more years of millions added to disability and food stamp roles, might be too late by 2016 to do anything. Economy collapsing from the debt will
accelerate dependency.

Sad but true.

Black Christians complained about gay marriage but lined up and supported Obama. Big time support.

They will vote skin color in DETROIT level garbage status. They’d do the same to the entire country. Just give up that demographic. West and Love lost. Blacks don’t want anything more than handouts.

A number of women I have talked to have identified Mourdoch’s and Akin’s statements on rape to be a deciding factor.

We need more discipline in our candidates. A lot more.

Social conservatives make it tough to pivot to the general election.

You don't think the social fabric of a country isn't tied into economics or foreign policy you are delusional

Countries fall from within

Tear down the mores of society and you end up disintegrating

You really think the abortion loving homosexual championing fools are going to vote for economic and foreign policy sanity --they are "government take care of us" idiots
