Maryland, Maine back gay marriage in breakthrough votes
The Washington Times ^ | November 6, 2012 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Gay marriage advocates cheered victories in voter initiatives in Maryland and Maine on Tuesday night and seemed poised to win in two other states. The votes were first setbacks at the ballot box for opponents of same-sex marriage after more than 30 victories.

With 93 percent of the vote counted in Maryland, Ballot Question 6, which legalizes gay marriage in the state, was leading by 52 percent to 48 percent, and supporters were already claiming victory in the heated and expensive battle.

“Today the marriage equality map expands to Maryland, giving thousands more loving couples the opportunity to make lifelong commitments through marriage,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, which poured almost $3 million into the Maryland ballot issue.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who pushed for gay marriage, said to Maryland’s children, “please know that you and your families matter to the people of our state. Whether your parents happen to be gay or straight, Democratic, Republican or independent, your families are equal before the eyes of the law.”

In Maine, Question 1, which also approves gay marriage, was ahead 52 percent to 48 percent, with 60 percent of the precincts counted.

“Maine voters chose freedom over fear,” said Shenna Bellows, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine.

In Minnesota, an amendment to limit marriage to only one man and one woman was in a dead heat: With 53 percent of the votes tallies, 48 percent approved the amendment, 48 percent rejected it and 4 percent left it blank. The amendment must have 50 percent or more affirmative votes to be adopted.

In Washington state, the fourth state with a gay marriage measure on the ballot Tuesday, early returns showed voters approving gay marriage 52 percent to 48 percent . . .

Sad. We are losing more and more of the culture war battles at this point. The country is changing rapidly - and not for the better. What passes for the American public will soon be largely secular and socialist. This spiral downward is likely to accelerate and will end in complete societal/economic collapse.

As it was in the Days of Lot, so shall it be in the days of the Coming of the Son of Man.

In those days they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, marrying and giving in marriage until the destruction came and took them all away.

And they knew not.

America is fast becoming not only Babylonian, but Sodom and Gomorrah.

It’s heartbreaking because it is my country, where I was born, where I was raised and where I once prospered.

But there is no denying what is happening.

Watch ABC’s back-to-back shows, “How I Met Your Mother” and “Partners”(?) (I think).

This is how the new America us being skooled (yes on purpose) by Hollywood.

And they think it cannot happen here.

We are definitely in the Last Days.

America is fast catching up to the decadence of Europe.

It is probably no coincidence it was 7 years from the economic crash of September, 2001 until September, 2008.

And then the hurricane was also 7 years from 2005 to 2012; both with significant results.

And the nation chose evil, with Barack the infanticide king and heavy promoter of gay marriage; destroying America and America’s military by demoralization.

Dang scary times.

Believe me that it’s only a matter of time before the guilt trips kick in. The idea that disagreement hurts is ever-prevalent in this hot button issue.

Second, the whole marriage issue should be more appealing now that the promise is exemption based on not taking government funding.

Third, it simply won’t be the popular way to go. You will be considered weird because your group doesn’t marry same-gender couplings.

As a final note, wired is not bad in today’s world anymore.

The late Spiro Agnew left liberal MD for CA, before it was so liberal, years ago. Maybe MD and CA can have intramural competition on who is the most liberal. But Agnew is not around to break the deadlock. MD people as a whole always disappoint, but I assume there are individual exceptions.

You say I should go to school — well, let school begin:

55% of women voted Dems overall

more importantly —
in the 18 to 29 demographic (the future members of any party)
60% voted Dems.

You were correct in one respect, the GOP got a demographic pounding by hanging on to outdated religious dogma.

This is the second thread today where I’ve seen your postings read like liberal baloney.

Lets see... Earlier today you talked about how you don’t care about gay marriage.

You also talked about how you don’t agree with abortion but don’t understand why it is so important to us conservatives to stop it.

Now you are spewing the phrase “religious zealot” on FReeRepublic.

You are posting on a conservative site. You and your liberal views don’t belong here.

Everyone on this thread should look up what you are posting. I thought we had rules against this crap.

Have you ever considered the idea that perhaps those who reject Christ and His teachings about life, marriage and family deserve to live under Democratic economic and security policies? The sad thing is these social libs choose to share and impose their misery on the rest of us who do not reject Christ.

Obviously the problem started with giving women the right to vote.

It's not going to be fixed by going even further in that direction.

Gay marriage is not winning in the deep South. It will have to be by judicial fiat after all of the other blue and purple states adopt gay marriage.

The deep red states are not going to vote for gay marriage any time in my lifetime, but I think we are going to see a lot more blue and purple states voting for it in the next few years.

The current Supreme Court is not going to hold that gay marriage is a constitutional right, but Obama may get more Supreme Court appointments in the next four years.

More importantly, I think there is a 50-50 chance that even the current Supreme Court would hold that, under the Constitution's Full Faith and Credit Clause, every state must recognize a marriage that was legal in the state where it was entered into.
