Puerto Rico wants to become the 51st state of the US
BBC News ^ | The Day After | 7 November 2012

Voters in Puerto Rico have supported a non-binding referendum to become a full US state.

The measure will require approval from the US Congress, but President Barack Obama has said he will respect the vote.

The island is currently a US territory, which uses the dollar and whose citizens travel on US passports.

But it does not return senators to the US Congress and is represented in Washington by a non-voting delegate.

Almost 80% of the island's electorate took part in the referendum, the fourth in the past 45 years.

With almost all the votes counted, almost 54% voted to change the island's relationship with the US.

And in reply to a second question on what future they favoured, nearly two-thirds wanted full statehood.

If Congress grants its approval, Puerto Ricans would have the right to vote in all US elections, but would also have to pay federal taxes, something at present they are excused from.

Puerto Rico has a Republican gov. The one thing I dislike about FR is the constant bashing of Hispanics.

Thanks for pointing that out. I get sick of it, too.

There are many of us who are Conservatives, and many more who have served this country honorably in the military.

Thanks to you and your sons for your service.

Now, isn’t that just ducky.

A whole state of welfare recipients.

What could go wrong?

Of course.

But you have to understand that “Hispanics” are among the largest law breakers in America. 1/3 of those incarcerated in the federal prison system are illegal aliens. Many who come here are takers not makers, flaunt our laws, form lobbying groups to support lawbreaking, won't learn English, and in the worst case declare they own the southwest. Hell, a few Hispanic entertainers are openly hostile to whites, for what reason I have no idea.

Statehood is not irrevocable.

The rebel states lost their soverignity when they committed insurrection. They got back in only with permission of the other states.

If PR wants to leave the US they can- with the permission of the other states. If that permission is not granted, then no they can not. Such permission could be expressed by
Constitutional Amendment.
Federal Legislation.
Successful Supreme Court Case.

Heck yes, we need Puerto Rico as another state. Then Cuba, Mexico and a few African states - just as long as we don’t get stuck with more of those constitution loving white people.

Oh, and load up on more dope smoking homosexuals too... lots of ‘em.

AND, female with breathing vaginas.... I just learned on FR that those even exist, so I’m down for more breathing vaginas... I just don’t want them to talk.

No, I am not racist, but today - I’m starting to feel a wee bit “racist leaning”.

Exactly. We ALL honor military service and traditional values holders in this country, but introduce oneself as an INDIVIDUAL, not a group!

Do the Senators have investments there as they do in the American Samoa? Congress critters would not want to give up their largess of gifts and money.

I don’t have a problem with Hispanics. However, I do recognize that unrestricted immigration has made assimilation next to impossible for large sections of Hispanics.

People are just scared because the party’s about ready to collapse, and nobody has any answers to fix things. The Hispanic Question has been around since the 80s, and nobody has answered it correctly.

The key words in your post are illegal aliens. The majority of Hispanics in this country are native born. My family has been in New Mexico since 1598. This vitriol against people with Spanish surnames is killing the Republican party. It doesn’t matter that we are the party has Marco Rubio or Susanna Martinez if we keep this crap up. Perception is reality to many people, and right now the perception is the Republican party is anti Hispanic.

I have always hated fags, liberals and democrats so yes, I am a racist. They’re the race I despise.
