We're already hearing thoughts on what the GOP needs to do to win again. Here's a view from a non-political, America-living, Christian conservative who votes.
For the record, I'm not a politician, but I am an evangelical Christian conservative, a family man with a wife of 41 years, children and grandchildren, I stay informed, and I vote. On that basis, I offer the following free and sincere principles regarding what conservatives need to do to ever have a chance of winning again.
- Don't take advice from liberals - in fact, it would be a good start to do the exact opposite from what they advise us to do.
- Stay true to our conservative values - if in doubt, consult the Bible and our Founders.
- Point out the facts about the opponent - not in a mean-spirited or personal attack manner, just the objective facts.
- Shape the rhetoric, don't play defense all the time - you have to score to win.
If we can focus on and be true to these principles, we might generate interest from the all-too-silent majority - evangelicals and true conservatives and they might turn out to vote. In addition, we might just get the attention of evangelical, true conservative Hispanics and blacks.
If we don't hold true to these values, and especially if we continue to follow the advice of liberals, the difference between liberals and conservatives will become even more blurred, so the majority of the electorate will continue to vote for those who offer them the most freebies.
In America, beginning in the late 1800's, under the name of "liberals," now known as "progressives," that movement began its now decades-long effort to remove the principles and ideas underlying our Constitution's protections from the nation's textbooks and public discourse.
On another thread today, the question was aked, "What do we need to do differently?" Good question!
Constitutional illiteracy--that is the primary reason we are continuing on the road to tyranny under deficit, debt, and government control! The secondary reason is the GOP's failure to use its billion-dollar campaign to focus like a laser on educating voters!
During the primary season, one of my FR posts stated the following in response to a Jonah Goldberg comment about Romney:
Sorry, Jonah, but this is not as simple as "not speaking the language (of conservatism) naturally." When a person is steeped in the ideas of Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and Washington, it just "naturally" slips through in the ideas they convey. Remember Reagan?Do Republicans seriously want to conserve America's constitutional principles? Or, are they just objecting to Democrats? Do they have a passion for liberty? Is this just about changing the Party in power, or is it about preserving freedom?
If their concern is for convincing enough voters to reject the idea of "a government big enough to give you everyting you want" and turn to advocacy for "a government small enough to allow you freedom to keep most of what you earn," then they'd better get busy seeing that someone is nominated who has been "marinated" (to use a word coined by Ingraham last night on "The Factor") in the Founders' ideas (isn't that what conservatives purport to "conserve"?).
So far (February 2012), Mitt Romney, though a good man, demonstrates no such "immersion." He has been "successful" in benefiting from those ideas, and he recites familiar words and phrases from patriotic speeches and songs, but that is different from understanding and being able to call up and articulate the philosophy which made such success possible.
Ronald Reagan's life and letters reveal that he had "immersed" himself in those ideas for years before he agreed to run for President, and that is why he could set "issues" in light of constitutional "principle." and explain his advocacy or rejection of solutions in by that light.
The other three candidates in the Primary--Paul, Santorum, Gingrich--couch their answers to questions in a manner which indicates personal pursuit and understanding of the Constitution's protections, each in his own way.
Of the two so-called "frontrunners," however, the lifetime history scholar, teacher, legislator, and participant in what was called "the Reagan revolution," appears to be the one most likely to be able to successfully articulate and distinguish those ideas to voters, if given the chance to compete with the "counterfeit ideas" of tyranny cloaked in righteous benevolence by Obama.
Is "politics as usual" to win the day, or might we not bring Gingrich, Santorum, Paul, and others who embrace founding principles together to help to create a "passion" for liberty among citizens sufficient to defeat the counterfeit ideas which are leading the Republic to ruin?

"It was John Adams who said: "The foundation of every government is some principle or passion in the minds of the people." Clearly, the Founders' passion was liberty, and in order to secure that liberty, they sought out and incorporated into the United States Constitution those ideas and principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence.
"The French historian, Guizot, once asked James Russell Lowell, "How long will the American republic endure?" Lowell replied: "As long as the IDEAS of the men who founded it continue dominant."
"Herein lies the answer to the question, "Will the Experiment Succeed?"
"It can and will succeed IF the motivating "principle or passion in the minds of the people" is LIBERTY, and if that passion causes them to exert the determination and will to complete the needed restoration of the IDEAS upon which the great American experiment was based." ---(End of excerpted material)
My call to the GOP and all lovers of liberty is the same as then! To rediscover and recover liberty from the hands of those who are turning America into just another failing nation dominated by a government-over-people ideology, a determined and massive education effort should begin November 7, 2012, focused on the teaching of the fundamental principles essential to the survival of individual liberty for a people.
Fire every single campaign adviser from the Romney and McCain campaigns. They are worthless.
We are no longer in the land of reason.
We are in the land of bread and circuses.
What are you (government) giving to me? Phone. Food. Check. Daycare. School breakfast and lunch. A monthly check.
Latinos were signed up on food stamps through Spanish ads. No citizenship required. Get them in on it.
Citizenship. Amnesty. 80%.
Against that you want to reasonably discuss what? Go work. Go back to your country and get in line.
The only way is for the system to collapse. Start over post United Soviet States.
Step ONE: Nominate a CONSERVATIVE!
Steve Deace did a 10 Commandments of Political Warfare a few weeks ago which has a lot of good advice. Steve comes from the perspective of a Christian conservative who warned the GOP as much as Jim Robinson did that Romney was a bad nominee.

My sentiments exactly! We'll not re institute the constitution at the ballot box, obviously. The tree of liberty...
It's irrelevant here in California after being the dominant party for like a century.
Know why?
Immigration. The Democrats long ago lost the support of the Americans with their social radicalism and neo-Communist policies.
So the Democrats decided to import an electorate more to their liking. One that would desperate for a welfare state administered by Wise Liberals.
That's what they did. And they turbo-charged it by convincing a generation of idiots that we were "over populated" and needed to abort ourselves out of existence.
That's the real intent of the "environmental" movement.
In every single way, all of these initiatives have one goal: the march to State Socialism.
The White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Americans stood in the way of that. So they have to be gotten rid of.
What happened yesterday is proof that the Leftist Communist tactic of importing a new people to take over America is working.
No amount of electioneering and talk will change that.
Stop letting the media decide the candidates.

They finally had the full range of resources to run their playbook, and it fell woefully short. I remember Andrew always urged the DC GOP to tap into conservatives in Hollywood and the creative arts to engage in the pop culture wars. He implored them to use their skills to hone their message and outreach. Those efforts were universally rebuffed by the consultant class.”

We need to appeal to the few survivors of the "reeducation camps", they just might listen to reason.
To win again we need to face reality. Demographics are changing. I think we need to embrace the immigration issue. Hispanics are the future of America and now is the time to draw them to conservative beliefs. I feel the Hispanic population is for family, hard work and God. Ready to be flamed but Reagan knew this was the future.

With my heart I totally agree with you. With my brain I see that the conservative movement is shrinking and has to reach out somewhere.
Step 1: Build a time machine
Step 2: Go back to the McCarthy Era, and convince conservatives that focusing on elections isn’t going to fix everything, and have them take root in academia and the media.
Step 3: Prevent the Senate from enacting immigration reform in the ‘60s which shifted demographics so heavily against us.
I disagree with your premise in one regard: Constitutional and Biblical illiteracy--that is the primary reason we are continuing on the road to tyranny ...
Our schools don't teach the Bible or the Constitution - the Bible forms the foundation of our Constitution, and without the Constitution, America would not have lasted so long.
1980, 1984, 1994, and 2010 went well. Let’s try what worked in those years.
