The rotten oak tree from Atlas Shrugged
Atlas Shrugged | 1957 | Ayn Rand

Posted on 11/07/2012 1:47:49 PM PST by Maceman

The great oak tree had stood on a hill over the Hudson, in a lonely spot of the Taggert estate. Eddie Willers, aged seven, liked to come and look at that tree. It had stood there for hundreds of years, and he thought it would always stand there. Its roots clutched the hill like a fist with fingers stuck into the soil, and he thought if a giant were to seize it by the top, he would not be able to uproot it, but would swing the hill and the whole of the earth with it, like a ball at the end of a string. He felt safe in the oak tree's presence; it was a thing that nothing could change or threaten; it was his greatest symbol of strength.

One night, lightning struck the oak tree. Eddie saw it the next morning. It lay broken in half, and he looked into its trunk as into the mouth of a black tunnel. The trunk was only an empty shell; its heart had rotted away long ago; there was nothing inside - just a thin gray dust that was being dispersed by the whim of the faintest wind. The living power had gone, and the shape of it left had not been able to stand without it.

This powerful metaphor came to mind today as I pondered the inevitable collapse of the once invincible U.S.A.

Our Constitutional Republic was a grand idea; a wonderful and fragile experiment in Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness. We are now too far down socialism’s “free stuff” slope to stop the descent into madness and collapse. It’s not the fall that will kill us; it’s the sudden stop at the bottom.

All I can say is we've supported the welfare slugs long enough. In fact, money for THEIR keep comes out of our pay checks before we even get them!
There are hard working, fine Americans in this country who can't afford a cell phone for their kids, yet the slugs get theirs free of charge. Does that sound right to anyone else?
Not every working American can afford a two or three bedroom apartment. They have to live in small utility apartment because it's all they can afford, yet some bimbo who's never done anything for anyone in her life gets knocked up, and she gets the apartment as well as the equivalent of $40-$60K a year in "free" benefits. Does this sound fair to anyone else?

In a way, an economic crash is the only way to free the tax slaves. If there's no money to take, the slaves may have a hard time getting by, but they will because they've had practice already, and they'll be a free people again.

Screw the freeloaders. They can eat each other for all I care. My family has already done more than it's "fair" share.

A very powerful excerpt from AS. It causes me to ponder those who read it when first published in 1957 or perhaps the John Birch Society members of that time with their dire view of the political situation. They knew...they could see the clouds gathering...yet we laughed and played in the sunshine, bought by patriots’ blood, unwilling to understand the inexorable cycle of human folly and hubris.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. It's inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

Secession may be the only way out.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.

Socialism is a violation of the ten commandments ... thou shalt not covet ... thou shalt not steal ... honor they father and thy mother ...

And most hideously (socialism makes the government ALL powerful)

Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me.

“In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.

Daniel 8: 23-25

Excellent post. I’ve been struggling to find motivation to do any work today. Thanks for posting that. I just printed it and put it on my office door.

There was a pacifist plea during WW2. Naive as it suggested it against Nazis. But that the key was simple passive disobedience. Refusal to acknowledge the Germans if they invaded.

I think falling back and strengthening ourselves akin to what the free state project wanted to do. Because if you live in an area where you know nobody will enforce anything on the feds behalf you’ve essentially liberated yourself from them.

Socialism is a violation of the ten commandments ...

When the 10 Commandments are removed from the public square, their opposites move in to fill the void.

Political correctness, or the doctrine of demons, has been taught to the children in the government schools as universal truth.

OweBama is just an antichrist wannabe. look elsewhere.

The Antichrist will make himself appear to be a man of peace during his first three and 1/2 years. It's the second three and 1/2 years we have to worry about. This is when he exposes his true evil.

According to Nostradamus, the Antichrist is "The Black King." People thought he meant a man with a darkened heart for years. Maybe this is a literal interpretation.

The Antichrist will be anti-Jew (Israel) and anti-christian (U.S.) and his goal will be to destroy both. He will be a leader of the world.

The Muslim Mahdi is the Bibles Antichrist. The description, including the mark on the hand or forehead, is the same. The Antichrist worships Allah. He's the man the Muslims have been waiting for.

That’s already been tried, with much bloodshed and a long, hard struggle. It failed, and many of the same states that today resist Hussein’s folly are now those in red on the map; but are even now strong-armed by “Union” forces up north and made to live under tyrants. - Secession might be nice for a change if we could do it peaceable. - I think Texas may be able to do that, both legally and physically. Ugh, though. The illegals in Texas are a real problem; and it’s also real, real hot there in the summer.

The illegals in Texas are a real problem..

If Texas left the Union they could create their own immigration laws....AND enforce them.

We were invincible while we were moral. We are no longer moral, as a whole. The subsequent collapse is inevitable.

The poison took hold in the 1960s. Since then, we have only been fighting a rear-guard delaying action against national collapse.

Now the enemy within is at the gates and the fall is imminent.

It has been more than a decade since I have wondered how the Roman Empire fell. I no longer wonder because I am seeing it in real time. The masses are lazy and decadent and want free stuff rather than work. Meanwhile, the US is flooded with Mexicans while Europe is flooded with Muslims.

I know exactly now how Rome Fell. Immorality and opening their doors to invaders. I am seeing it all in real time along with the parallel collapse.
