Russian Attack Sub Off Our Coast As Sequestration Looms
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | November 7, 2012

Defense: The fruit of unilateral disarmament, appeasement and promised "flexibility" patrols our East Coast near one of our largest ballistic missile submarine bases. Defense cuts and Russian subs — a double whammy.

'On June 1 or a bit later, we will resume constant patrolling of the world's oceans by strategic nuclear submarines," Russian Navy Commander Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky said in February. Keeping that promise, a Russian Sierra-2 class nuclear attack submarine cruised within 200 miles of our East Coast on the eve of a U.S. presidential election in which defense spending and priorities were a key issue.

This is the first time a Russian Sierra-2 class sub, believed to be based with Russia's Northern Fleet and armed with SSN anti-submarine warfare missiles and torpedoes, has been detected near the U.S. coast, reports Bill Gertz of the Washington Free Beacon.

"As was their primary mission during the Cold War, Russian SSNs nuclear attack submarines would likely be trying to track U.S. nuclear missile submarines deploying from Kings Bay, Ga., and to monitor U.S. naval deployments from Norfolk, Va.," according to Richard Fisher, a military analyst with the International Assessment and Strategy Center. Two guided missile submarines and six nuclear missile submarines are docked at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.

The Sierra-2 is comparable to the U.S. Los Angeles-class attack submarine. Russia is building a new class of attack submarines said to be comparable to the latest U.S. Virginia-class subs, Fisher says. The attack sub was accompanied by a nearby Russian electronic intelligence-gathering vessel that was granted safe harbor during Hurricane Sandy in the commercial port of Jacksonville, Fla., within listening range of Kings Bay.

....was granted safe harbor during Hurricane Sandy ...

This still baffles me. Why would a submarine need a safe place during a storm?

get use to it

0bama took our arsenal from over 6,000 warheads to under 1,000 in the 3 1/2 yrs he’s been in office

in the next 4 years, we won’t have any left.

at which point, we get to stare down the russians and chinese with... indignation?

good luck with that

The phrase, “testing the waters”, takes on a whole new meaning in this context. In the past I worked on cases involving international incidents involving Russia. I knew it would only be a matter of time before they rose to be an even more powerful threat than they were pre-1990’s after their fall. Recently I read reports where they are completely updating all their military technology which concerns me as the U.S. has almost always had the upper hand in this area. Now with our economic infrastructure substantially weakened and the socialist ideologies made more acceptable by liberal school systems (that were manipulated by foreign elements for said purpose) it would not take much to put us onto a tailspin and they know this. Now that they own your children’s minds the task to repel these foreign threats will be much harder.

Ivan’s Sierra II’s are “special” . They only made two, so far as I can tell, since they turned out to be lead pigs. The hulls are titanium which sounds neat but it has a fatal defect in a constant seawater atmosphere. The stuff “pinholes “ right straight thru. Putin might be trying to put a few miles on one before he has to either park it or bottom-fish for it.

I’m sure that we can arrange to ship in Chinese goods via alternate routes, maybe truck them in from Canada and Mexico :P

...since they turned out to be lead pigs.

Could that be because of the boats itself or because of the untrained/inexperienced crews that are manning them. Russians patrol their boats so infrequently that the crews can't be anything but rookies every time they sail.

It was lying in wait to see who would be elected President. If Romney, who was on the East Coast in Boston - then they would attack. Obama was safely in Chicago!

Maybe? I guess I have become twisted!

It was a separate surface vessel (target) that tied up in port during the storm.
