2010 Flashback: Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin
Politico ^ | October 31, 2010 | MIKE ALLEN & JIM VANDEHEI

Top Republicans in Washington and in the national GOP establishment say the 2010 campaign highlighted an urgent task that they will begin in earnest as soon as the elections are over: Stop Sarah Palin.

Interviews with advisers to the main 2012 presidential contenders and with other veteran Republican operatives make clear they see themselves on a common, if uncoordinated, mission of halting the momentum and credibility Palin gained with conservative activists by plunging so aggressively into this year’s midterm campaigns.

There is rising expectation among GOP elites that Palin will probably run for president in 2012 and could win the Republican nomination, a prospect many of them regard as a disaster in waiting.

(snip)

"There is a determined, focused establishment effort … to find a candidate we can coalesce around who can beat Sarah Palin," said one prominent and longtime Washington Republican. "We believe she could get the nomination, but Barack Obama would crush her."

Well, the corrupt, feckless GOP-E owns last night's debacle. If anyone wants to follow the road back to see where it all started, then remember this story from 2010 and then consider this one from last night:

Steve Schmidt: GOP must muzzle Rush Limbaugh

Mitt Romney really was electable...right?

Sarah Palin would not have won.

And you know this how? At least she would have fought Obama with every last breath, unlike candidate milquetoast.

Governor Palin would have won and helped the down ticket.

The Governor has a history of winning and succeeding in politics, Romney has a history of losing and failing.

Governor Palin took on both parties and healed the state with the highest approval ratings in history, and Romney damaged his state party, and was forced out of office with 34% approval and forced into giving up his desire to run again, and losing the seat to the dems.

The GOP-e really thought that a billionaire with Wall St. ties would be a great candidate during a depression. This election was a walk in the park for the Communists.

Conservatives could see it coming, but by and large, held their noses and voted Republican anyway. This can’t be blamed on us. It can be blamed on people like Carl Rove and Charles Krauthammer, who disdain Sarah Palin as a country bumpkin. She helped McCain pull about six million more votes than Romney got. So much for their vaunted “expertise.”

And you know she would have won, how? She didn’t fight Obama this election with every breath.

She is making a fitness video and her kid was dancin’ with the stars.

Anyway, the larger point is not about Palin, but that the GOP-E made a conscious, determined effort to undermine the TEA Party movement and any potential truly Conservative candidates in 2010 to clear the way for Team Romney.

Last night's election returns are the bitter fruit of that really stupid strategy.

So you begrudge them making a living after the GOP-E stabbed Palin in the back and essentially banished her from the party at large?

You realize TPTB in the Romney campaign AND the GOP-e were deliberately keeping her at arm’s length, right?

Along with the Tea Party. This loss is entirely on the Republican Establishment.

Bah.

The TEA Party movement and Sarah Palin all got too enamored with themselves.

We got too complacent.

Popular won’t save us....

You really think you know what God had planned for her and America? Those who call themselves republicans hated her and thrashed her continuously even on this site and said she would never win. God gives and, if it not received, then He takes away. But He knows the end from the beginning. Look where we are now.

Also, this article is from Politico who trashed her continuously. It shouldn’t be allowed on FR, IMO.

So I take it that you are not part of the TEA Party movement?

At least Milquetoast Mitt ran and made his way through the primaries, unlike “fire in the belly” Palin. Sorry.

I guess you take it wrong. If I don’t nod in agreement, I am not part of a movement?

The TEA party isn’t a bus, a website or any of that. That is a group of people trying to capture it for $$$$.

Anyhooo.................

No, the article should be plastered on FR's page every waking day so that FReepers can understand exactly how the GOP-E plots and schemes against Conservatives.

You see, Politico is not only a Rat propaganda organ, but it is the weapon of choice for the GOP-E inside the DC beltway. Rove, Rollins, Gillespie, Schmidt, etc all have Mike Allen's phone number on speed dial, and anytime they want to stick a shiv in a Conservative, they call him up and he obligingly does the story.

Palin herself confirmed that it was accurate shortly after it was published in October 2010.

I'm wondering if she is second-guessing herself this morning about her decision to not run for President, in light of Romney's dramatic trouncing?

“Governor Palin would have won and helped the down ticket.”

Perhaps the Gov Palin would have won if she wasn’t picked by McCain. She helped McCain but McCain didn’t help her.

This is Politico and Steve Schmidt is a fool. Anyone with the sense God gave a gnat knows he is a real loser. If they would do it; I think Palin/Limbaugh or visa versa would make a great President and Vice President. I also think Mark Levin would be a great President. Don’t let them drown out the conservative voices. It sounds like they are trying to do just that. The GOP is doing that especially by calling themselves moderates.

I not only SEE but KNOW and I have NO desire to read their trash, their propaganda but you obviously do. They publish because they get hits - I am always for STARVING the beast and I find no need to fill my head with what 'they think'.

Sarah Palin stopped herself. She didn’t need any help from the GOP-E.

The GOPe was represented by Perry jumping in just as Palin’s powerful, brilliant, and unique road to announcing, was coming to completion.

He ambushed her after saying that he would not run, and he stuck around just long enough to make sure she was blocked.
