Early voting shrinks in Florida, absentee balloting grows

(Reuters) - Florida voters cast fewer early ballots in the 2012 presidential election than in 2008, but they submitted more absentee ballots than they did four years ago, according to statewide elections figures released on Monday.

Democrats, who typically make up a large proportion of early voters, managed only a 167,653 edge over Republicans in the voting at early balloting sites. That was well below the margin in 2008, when Democrats led in early voting by almost half a million ballots.

Republicans have the edge in absentee voting - 79,339 more Republican ballots were turned in than Democratic ballots by Sunday. Absentee voting had exceeded the 2008 totals by 207,308 ballots.

Republicans were targeting AB voters this election - straight from the ‘horse’s mouth’ ... a relative working for the Romney campaign in FL.

The early voting period was curtailed compared to the last election.
We saw a long line at the polling station down the road from us on Saturday. Went back Saturday evening and it was even longer.
I’ve voted the last several elections by absentee ballot, but will be voting on Tuesday this time.

Absentee balloting means that they might be voting elsewhere in person, if there are no checks on the practice.

One issue curtailing Florida early voting and causing long queues: The 2012 ballot is HUGE with twelve (12) ridiculously legalese laden constitutional amendments.

Voters take 20-60 minutes to complete the lengthy ballot. With limited polling sites during early voting, lines were incredibly long.

With absentee ballots, you can vote in the comfort of your home, at your leisure. I'm seriously considering an absentee ballot for future elections.

How many of those absentee voters are comfortably ensconced in their NY residences? Someday when someone gets the stats on these dual residences voting in both states it’s going to shock the masses.

Obama only got about 51% of the vote in Fla in 2008. Dems are admitting in Fla that they’re going to have to outperform 2008 in election day turnout to win this time. Chances seem slim and none for that to happen.

I heard about the huge FL ballot... wow. Voting usually takes me all of 5 minutes where we live, lol.

What was #4 all about? While in FL recently, I saw the commercials about #4... supposedly "rich" snowbirds wouldn't have to pay certain taxes in FL, while year-round FL residents had to pay more taxes...?
