A woman student who said she was attacked outside a campus building on Oct. 1 made up the story and will face punishment, University of Florida Police said Wednesday afternoon.

Sarah Lawrence, 20, told police she was walking near Weimer Hall around 9:30 p.m. when a man armed with a knife tried to sexually assault her, according to the UPD Criminal Investigations Unit.

This is as casual a response as can be issued:

"Something happened in my life, something got out of hand basically, and it didn't have to be that way," she said. "It became a bigger deal by itself, and it kept going I guess."

Wow, she might actually get suspended. I think she should be expelled and do a year in the state pen.

Let’s take this one step farther....the police believe her story, find some sap who fits her description, take him into custody, immediately release his name to the press (her’s was not released till just now. It comes to pre trial and his appointed attorney says, well, I have a huge case load and based on her testimony you are going to get convicted but you can plead guilty and take a deal to time served and be listed as a sex offender for life or go to jail for 20 if you do not....

Quote “State Attorney Bill Cervone said this type of situation is not rare. “This comes up fairly often,” he said.”

About time they cracked down on false claims!

Her “...bump in the road...” comment clarified matters for me.

Just trying to remember where I recently heard that...

miserable wretch, penalties for falsely reporting a crime should be the same as the false crime reported... that would cut this crap out in a hurry

Akin in MO was crucified for referring to “legitimate rape,” but there are cases of false accusations of rape, which is what he meant. Young men have been ruined by such charges, filed by women who have changed their minds about having had intercourse.

That’s what I’m wondering. No picture of the girl, but the way she worded her statement kind of makes me suspicious. There’s something being left out of this story, and that’s usually race.

I believe the distinction Akin was making was between violent (real, ‘legitimate’) rape and statutory rape (18 yo guy and 17 yo girlfriend), not ‘false accusational rape’.

He could’ve worded that better, but his meaning was fairly clear and the storm that ensued puzzles me still.

The only problem with what you suggest is that the penalties would likely thwart a lot of voluntary recantations. (That doesn’t apply in this case, where the police proved she was lying.)
