EPA Regulations Wreak Havoc on Ohio Coal, Electric Companies
Red State ^ | 11/1/2012 | staff

Posted on 11/04/2012 4:14:03 AM PST by tobyhill

The Utility Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) rules imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are taking a toll on Ohio’s coal industry and are expected to increase citizens’ electricity costs. Utility MACT, a series of bureaucratic regulations created under the Clean Air Act with the support of President Obama and U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), has already caused coal-fired plant closures and layoffs.

Even as natural gas production ramps up in the state, the fact that 82 percent of Ohio’s electricity is generated using coal suggests Utility MACT will also increase energy costs statewide. Natural gas prices paid by utility companies hit a 10-year low of under $2 per million British thermal units in April 2012, but Reuters reported on October 24 that prices have risen substantially as national production has flattened and an expected cold winter approaches.

What’s amazing is he outright said he was going to destroy the coal industry.

Ok Ohio, the ball is in your court: reelect Obama and watch your electricity bills skyrocket. You can be assured that the only reason they have risen but not skyrocketed is that Obama needs a second term to do maximal damage to the American economy with his radical green ideology. Perhaps you are under the delusion that Obama will pay your electric bill. Suppose he does. Will he also pay the electric bill of small businesses that suffer even more from high electric rates? Will he keep industry from moving to China where electricity will cost 1/10 as much?

I have an acquaintance with a man who works for one of the coal-fired plants down here in southern Ohio, on the river bordering W. Virginia. In 2008, he warned his co-workers about that very thing—even pointing them to the words Obama had spoken. Many either denied it or said ‘he can’t do that.’ They’re listening now...and they’re ticked.

Fools in the Enviro-Wacko Party could care less that the Utilities won't suffer one cent of losses; they just pass costs right onto Consumers, and spend Billions on Lobbying to make sure they are not economically-harmed.

Look at the "Donations" from Ohio Utilities, and how their CEO's sit on all the "Task Forces" to protect their bottom-line.

Look, also, at the multi-million-dollar Executive Compensation structures, and tell me how they are being hurt?

My post from an earlier thread:

*****

Check out the map.

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209611697914812565322.0004bb627ee4991874568&msa=0&ll=39.707187,-96.899414&spn=21.595648,46.538086

The Eastern half of the US is going to be devastated. Zoom in on individual states to see locations better. Click on the blue pointers to see info. The column on the left gives more details.

With all these plants closing, what do we do for electrical energy? The remaining plants can’t possibly handle the load and I don’t see large numbers of “clean” plants under construction.

This is something Romney should start pounding on. Bring out the charts in each state and show people what obama has planned for them.

This is just another spike in our coffin if allowed to continue. The obama master plan marches on.

Check out the map I link to in my post #9. Not just Ohio will be affected. Virginia has a few, too, as does almost every state east of the Mississippi.

We will generate power with clean, nonfracked natural gas

If you look at the map and click on the various plants listed, you will see that they are listed as being closed, not converted to natural gas. I don't hear of any new NG plants being built near where I live to replace the coal-fired ones that are being closed.

The assumption seems to be, "Well, since the economy is down, we don't need that extra capacity."

The fact is that the loss of that capacity will not help the economy recover.

I just looked at your map and it is scary to see AEP plants to be closed. I know people who worked at those plants!

I retired from an AEP coal plant a few years back. They use low sulfur Wyoming coal and the plant is extremely clean.

The EPA is now requiring them to install scrubbers to remove that miniscule amount of sulfur left, and install a bag house.

The problem is, the Public Service Commission will not allow them to pass along the cost of building the EPA mandated scrubbers. So the plant may be shut down and abandoned.

And the numbskulls in PA, VA, IL, OH and other coal states voted for the bastard anyway.

Well, there IS such a thing.

You never can tell a joke online as I’ve learned when mine were misinterpreted.

Best to use a “/s” when there’s any doubt.

WV coal mines have been shut down by the EPA. Lots of miners where at the early voting polls in WV yesterday a.m. according to my brother. A couple in their 80’s were there and needed help with the voting process. He suspects they never voted before. No way were they voting for the boy!

Yeah, you never know when that last molecule of sulfur might bump into a human somewhere along the way. /s
