FEMA may not have enough for flood damages

But the key question is does it have enough for flood damage?

Sandy has flooded thousands of homes in its devastating path, and estimates are that damages will in the billions of dollars. FEMA, which runs the federal flood insurance program, has to pick up the tab.

But FEMA already owes $18 billion to the Treasury Department, thanks to Hurricane Katrina. Currently, insurance experts say FEMA's flood insurance program has access to funds totaling $3.8 billion, much of it in loans.

If flood claims exhaust the fund, Congress may have to step in with additional taxpayer money. That will add to the already bloated national deficit, and anger fiscally-conservative members of Congress.

Private insurers don't cover flooding. Sandy's storm surge pushed water from the Atlantic Ocean into basements and first floors in coastal Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, where subway tunnels remain flooded.

By Wednesday, FEMA was still concentrating its efforts on coordinating search and rescues and aid to those without power.

It hasn't released an estimate on flood damages, but experts are raising serious doubts on whether FEMA's funds will be enough to cover the costs for its National Flood Insurance Program.

A strong word of advice for those still in the NYC and New Jersey areas seriously affected by Sandy who had not prepared well in advance and who are unprepared for what you are experiencing and who are unprepared for what is coming:

Weather experts are forecasting a possible Nore-Easter in your area this coming week. If this forecasted weather event is strongly expected to happen, you have been warned! Things and "stuff" can be replaced, your life and the lives of your family and friends cannot. Do whatever you have to in order to get out of the area NOW while you still have the ability to do so! Take the bare essentials you need for the trip, for survival and for personal protection and leave! Go stay with friends and family who are located out of state and out of the area. Don't try and "tough it out", don't try and "hang in there". Use any means at your disposal to get out of the area ASAP because FEMA and the government cannot and will not save you. So do not expect them to because they can't, and in Mayor Bloomberg's case, he won't because he stubbornly refuses to call in the ARMED National Guard to protect you, to keep the peace and to maintain order. Gather your family and friends and get the heck out of where you are before it gets really bad.

Things are dreadfully serious now but if this bad, wet, cold, windy weather takes place on top of what you are already experiencing it will only compound an already dire situation, totally overwhelm the services which are already stretched to the limit and you will be left on your own to survive against the elements, savages and wildlings who are taking over.

FEMA, which runs the federal flood insurance program

Another bankrupt Federal program which causes people to make uneconomic choices and depletes the treasury

FEMA is just like the public school system. They get billions in tax dollars, but fritter it all away on administration, so they never have ANY funds to use for the purpose for which they were created.

You'd think more people would catch on to the 'government scam'.

Thanks, they have been WARNED, there is nothing else that can be done for them.

ALAS, they will not heed. No gas, WALK. Call your non affected relatives, and have them meet you somewhere. There will be no excuses for not doing so any longer.

There must several Hollywood celebrity charity events ready to aired!

Just imagine if those communities had the hundreds of millions funds they each gave to the various film production companies in the form of tax breaks.

Amen... I hadn't even thought about calling non-affected family and friends and have them come, meet you at a pre-arranged location and deliver you out of the mess you are in. Excellent advice!

You are right, the HAVE BEEN WARNED. Anarchy, looting, and lawlessness have been and are taking over the affected areas. The government cannot and will not help, the situation is dire and getting worseby the hour. People are already reduced to urinating and deficating in the halls of their own high-rise apartment buildings! How long before pestilance, disease and death spreads throughout those buildings as a direct result of such outright stupidity?

The wisest course of action is for everyone still there to leave while they can.

Yep, this along with other millions spent at conventions and other party gatherings. We were at a hotel where they were staying and you’d better believe they were there for the evening happy hour...even wearing their stinking badges and some FEMA shirts!!! Most with dunlap disease-belly dun laped over the belt!

This was also weeks after things were turning back to normal.

Here in the TX fires, illegals and thugs were going to every shelter they could getting food, diapers, etc. Then they’d go to HEB and return them for money! Finally the shelters got smart and marked out the security code on free stuff so they’d know where it came from.

If my people who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, I will look from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their country. Boy, do we need 11Corin.7:14 now!!

A lot of people are paying into the National Flood Insurance Program. I bet when they read this it will sure make them feel all warm and fuzzy.

What a racket and a sham, just like every other big Govt program. Open up that lock box and watch the moths fly out.

We need to outlaw unions.

They served their purpose and then raided the country’s economy.

Those folks better pray that Romney wins, because there is no way in hell that the country will come together behind Obama.

I give to the Salvation Army, but the Red Cross will NEVER see a dime from me.... and, I will NEVER follow Obama or any other democrat.
