Davisburg trucker turned away in NYC after hauling power transformers

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it seems to be pretty clear that residents of New York City and the surrounding areas could use all the help they can get.

However, a Davisburg man said some people in the area are more interested in “protecting their turf” than in distributing those supplies to the masses.

Mike James, an independent trucker, said he and three other truckers were told to haul a load of transformers to the city to replace equipment anticipated to be lost in the storm.

James, two men from Holly and a Flint man arrived in the city Tuesday night and slept in their trucks before attempting to deliver the 144 transformers to emergency workers.

When they arrived Wednesday, they were turned away by Con Edison employees because they were not union workers.

The IBEW really should switch PR firms. This stinks.

Aren’t these union work rules an example of red tape and bureaucracy?

Didn’t Obama say that there would be no red tape or bureaucracy?

What’s the deal here? Can’t we waive regulations such as union work rules when there is a national disaster? Has this been officially declared a disaster? State of emergency? Why is this happening; it’s not the first time that non-union people have been turned away during Sandy.

Proud union work, all of it.
For twice the cost and half the work.
And the unions can own the fail too.

Union supporting New Yorkers deserve everything they get. I am having difficultly in finding any sympathy for these people.

And the unions and governors will declare this isn’t happening.

Wow, unbelievable. At a time like this, they care only about Numero Uno.

Why hasn’t Barry sent in the National Guard to get these union knuckledraggers under control? The military should be escorting these people trying to get New Yawk and New Jersey back on line. The people living up there need help. They don’t give a damn if those helping are union or non-union.

I sympathize with them. Thanks to unions, they’re being screwed for a longer period of time. At least, that’s one possible result, unless union workers are there to pick up the equipment and install it.

The union mentality mirrors the leftist ‘entitlement mentality’. It’s all about ME! Great publicity.

144 transformers. That means thousands of people just had their power restoration delayed.

The National Guard was denied entry in NYC by Mayor Bloomberg - he didn’t want personnel with guns in his city. Seriously.

I hope there is at least one honest elected politician or public bureaucrat who WILL prosecute these union thugs for criminal negligence.

I know what the people who have been in the dark must feel about unions about now...

Me? I would... (deleted to avoid a Freeper timeout)

Doomberg isn’t right in the head. He needs to stick to pushing the button to drop the ball on New Year’s Eve, hiding the salt shakers and smearing the Big Gulps. Everything else is way above his pay grade.

How incredibly selfish and stupid these people are! The aid was to be dropped off, then the trucks would be on their way home. The union jobs weren’t being threatened in any way.
Same thing with the utility workers. They help restore the power, they are being paid by their current employer and they are gone in a week. Not a single union member loses a job because of the caring of others and people have their power back sooner.
It should be a win win, right? Not to the unthinking, knee jerk unions. Unfortunately, those unions are creating ill will with their childish petulance. The residents will remember why it took so long for the electric to come back on.
