“This morning we’re distributing stuff here and we’re helping people dig out and we hear the sanitation guys scream out that there are bodies in the pile. Everybody jumps on the pile and starts pulling away debris. And, unfortunately, probably not reported right now, it was probably an hour and a half ago, certainly three more people deceased. God bless them… We keep seeing these huge convoys of FEMA and Janet Napolitano and Homeland Security driving by with clipboards writing things down. But there’s not a single soul in the street. We have volunteers and other people coming out giving water from their own homes. People need gloves. People need blankets and you can get to these homes. The question is, where is the government assistance?“

I cannot shape coherent comments about this disaster, part of me wants to sympathize with the victims, part of me wants to say something else as they made their bed there, voted there, and are dying there.
Its a bloody shame we cannot get Romney into executive position just hours after he does win the election just so we can get a real leader instead of a falsetto POTUS.
I always give what I can to the Salvation Army for disasters. It seems they get help there better, they just don’t get the recognition.
That’s sad. Sorry Staten Island is going through so much.
Wondering how all those electric cars are doing in those areas? At this point a horse would work best.
The Red cross has 230 Emergency Response Vehicles deployed and have over 250 shelters up an running. Additionally, the Southern Baptist Food service crews that bring their trailers to prepare the food dispensed by the Red Cross ERVs are up and running.
So far the New Jersey food services unions have not turned them away and petty bureaucrats have not made health inspections...... at least to my knowledge. New Jersey has a bad reputation for obnoxious people and down right surly treatment of the volunteers.

It is amazing to me how dependent these people are on the government. You never hear stories like this when more powerful storms hit Florida, the Carolinas, or the Gulf Coast.

Oh, and they refused help from Southern electrical utility crews so I don’t know what they are whining about. The Southern crews are the best anywhere due to practice after tornadoes. Tornadoes destroyed homes in several towns in TN this year and we had power within the week.

They're only dependent on the (predictably incompetent) government in an emergency. Normally they're just dependent on supply-side capitalism.

We are concerned about Staten Island, but the unions turning away help has a miffed, and we are in a conundrum as to whether we should help people that don’t want the assistance.

In the Texas fires and Hurricane Ivan we mostly helped ourselves for many days.
Social networking via Facebook is a great tool if you can get the efforts focused to one or two sites and then get them publicized. Thelocal law enforcement and government officials need to join in on this ASAP.
We had a network that posted a list on the hour of what was needed. Things were dropped off at a collection center outside the disaster zone, repackaged, palleted and then trucked into the disaster area. We moved thousands of tons of materials this way. We only accepted packaged things to eat and clothing was washed before distribution if it was not new.
There are really only a few things that are essential to living... think Maslow... food / water, clothing, shelter... the rest can wait.
Then perhaps you better not because folks will be saying the same thing about you should a cataclysmic disaster hit your neighborhood.......
