For more than five months — while Julie Cervera struggled to pay a $600 electrical bill, feed her family and keep the cable company from shutting off her service because she couldn't pay — she was a millionaire without knowing it.
Meanwhile, her $23 million lottery ticket languished forgotten in the glove compartment of her car.

I’m going to guess she’s a woman of faith. Or if she isn’t, she ought to be.

Win/win situation. She’s financially sound for the rest of her life..and hopefully her whole family, and the rest of us don’t have to pay for them any more.
The problem is that, now that her winnings are public knowledge, every person with a sob story is going to come crawling out of the woodwork to get money out of her and others will sue her for imaginary damages to get money out of her and, since she’s in California, probably half of the money will disappear in taxes, etc.
Give that woman a year and she’ll be back on disability and welfare.
She’ll be in bankruptcy court within 3 years.A huge majority of big time lottery winners are.
Reality sets in when she finds out how much her wonderful government takes from her winnings.
Sucks to have half of your money swiped in one fell swoop.
His woman did not work her way out of poverty. She used California taxpayer’s provided money to buy lottery tickets. She will serve as an example for millions to do likewise. We working folks don’t have the spare cash for gambling.
and hopefully her whole family, and the rest of us don’t have to pay for them any more....Not until they catch her getting welfare, disability, etc. Then she can explain, “I have two houses ( or three or four) and I can’t afford it without my Obama check ( like the other winner did).

That cant be for just one months payment. Guess her “situation” is special and the Elec Co. didnt cut her off.
"Back on", if she gets off at all. In some states that lump sum is not considered income so lotto winners can, and some do, continue to collect food stamps etc....
Considering it was almost certainly the tax payers that funded that ticket purchase it's debatable whether she should even be able to claim the winnings.
Could be one month’s bill.
Deregulation didn’t work out as well as they had hoped.
And is too lazy to check to see if any of them are winners. Has to be practically begged by her family to walk out to her car to verify a winning ticket.
Surprisingly California doesn’t tax Lotto winnings. Go figure

Her winnings are going to last her about 2 months, and she will be poor again. She has no idea how to save money. It’s one big temporary piñata for her.
She needs to put a lot of it in annuity trusts for the kids to recieve when they are older. One major purchase, a house maybe a vehicle and then try to live normally on a smallish amount monthly.
That is how to make it last.
Ahhh those two adopted sons with development disabilities mean big money every month. You’d be surprised how many people do that to ‘up’ their money coming in every month.
