The Enthusiasm Is All GOP

Intensity, which translates into enthusiasm and therefore turnout, is an important factor in elections. One of President Obama’s fundamental problems is that, while his approval/disapproval ratings have hovered around 50/50 throughout his term, the intensity of those who disapprove of his performance has consistently been greater. We have noted this many times by referring to Scott Rasmussen’s Approval Index, which compares strong approval with strong disapproval. An incumbent who is in negative territory by this measure is likely in trouble. This graph shows Obama’s Approval Index from his inauguration to the present; currently he stands at -11. His strong approval numbers have improved somewhat over the course of the campaign, as Democrats express more loyalty, but note how consistent the strong disapproval has been:

This situation, which has existed for nearly all of Obama’s term, is reflected in the many polls that show Republicans are much more enthusiastic about voting this year than Democrats. Since there are about an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, that bodes well for the GOP.

The enthusiasm gap, while rarely commented on in the mass media, is reflected on the campaign trail just about every day. Barack Obama and Joe Biden generate relatively small crowds–far smaller than in 2008–and both Obama and his surrogates generally prefer to appear on college campuses, about the only remaining venues where they can hope for an enthusiastic crowd.

The opposite is true for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. They draw large, excited crowds pretty much everywhere they go. I was reminded of what it takes to draw a big crowd on the stump when I got an email invitation to Paul Ryan’s appearance in Minnesota on Sunday. The event will take place in an airplane hangar, and, with security requirements, the doors will open a full

Today in West Chester, Ohio, a crowd estimated at 25,000 turned out to cheer Mitt Romney. Twitchy has lots of photos, including this one:

Via InstaPundit, check out this remarkable panoramic view of the West Chester Rally. Here is a partial screen shot:

Obama drew 2800 people in Hilliard OH to his campaign rally on Friday.

When you compare that to the enormous crowd at Chester, its game over.

I don’t care what the jackass weasel Rasmussen wrote about OH on Friday.

No way is it tied there. Mitt has an enormous surge - he’ll win the Buckeye State on that surge and it won’t be close!

You can take that to the bank.

They have been strangely absent from the views offered by the press... Only close in shots, no wide angle crowd shots. Does seem a bit strange - if all those skewed polls are right there should be throngs still falling at the feet of their messiah as in 2008...

They had no problem showing the enthusiastic muddled masses four years ago - just sayin' ;-)

I saw two pictures on FR earlier today of O’Lame Duck-o’s rally, and the back of the crowd was shot easily with a wide gap between the photgrapher and the last gasp fans.I’ve seen more people in front of a third place pig’s pen at the Ventura County fair.
His rallies also seemed to be inside, to get that, “aren’t we all cozy together” look. But he never seems to tire of ragging on us. It’s what he lives for.

Let's be careful not to confuse Conservative/Patriot with GOP.

It's all GOP only because that's the sticker on this product.

AMERICA is awake(ning) and has rejected socialism, not necesarilly adopted Republicanism.

IMO

Ya see, Obama ole buddy. This is what happens when you divide the electorate. You please one side, and piss off the other side. If you divide like that enough times you will have a lot of pissed off people. That’s all you have done is govern by dividing. You drove the wedge deeper between liberals and conservatives, between whites and blacks, between hispanics and all the rest. You campaign just like you govern. Divide and conquer works with some things, but not the voting electorate. Once you’ve made a voter mad, there is not much you can do to get him or her back. You have made me mad, and I wouldn’t vote for you for Joe the Plumber’s apprentice.
