Utility workers pelted with eggs after Bridgeport, Conn. mayor blasts provider

Angry residents pelted utility crews with eggs as they tried to restore power in Bridgeport, Conn., after the mayor claimed the local power company had "shortchanged" the state's largest city as it tries to recover from superstorm Sandy.

United Illuminating workers reported eggs and other objects being thrown at them a day after Mayor Bill Finch said the utility was taking care of wealthy suburbs while his constituents suffered. The unrest caused United Illuminating to pull its workers out until the city agreed to provide police protection.

"Citizens began throwing things at the crews," Michael West, a spokesman for United Illuminating, told FoxNews.com. "It started to get pretty hairy. They did not feel safe."

West said it started with verbal abuse and escalated.

"We communicated with the city and said if you don’t provide police support, we can't have our crews there in harm's way," he said.

It used to be a decent place back in the 60s; it’s a sewer now.

It's really stupid to chase away people trying to help.

People do some really crazy things when they get frustrated. Back in the summer when the bad storms knocked out power to pretty much all of West Virginia, Western Maryland and Virginia. There were stories about utility workers being shot at, their trucks vandalized, being harassed and assaulted because they were in a restaurant eating lunch (perp thought they should be working I assume). Even stories about people who had gotten their power turned back on having their lines cut down because someone thought it wasn't "fair" that they had gotten their power back first.

Now the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of childish behavior.

Nope. The farthest in the North Eastern US I’ve ever traveled is TN. Never had a reason to go any higher.

I’ve been through a few hurricanes as I am sure you have in Florida.
These people are Idiots, who don’t have a clue how this all comes back on line.
True story, I live on a block with about 30 house on each side of the street. After Hurricane IKE, All the houses on the right hand side of mine, both sides of the street, had power in 12 hours, It was 2 more days before Me and the rest of the block had ours. No food fights here.Neighbors helped out. Some “richer” neigborhoods waited longer. Me 3 days, some took 2 weeks.

The lunatic Mayor should be arrested and charged with inciting a riot.....and then quickly sentenced to a visit to Old Sparky.

Then he should be immediately escorted to the ultimate hot seat.....stumbling all the way and praying the electricity in Bridgeport hasn't been turned on yet.

The mayor should just call Obama. He’ll go down to the power company and kick their asses.

I’ve had rocks thrown at me during storm recovery and have been yelled at and called names and accused of using the storm to turn their water and power off intentionally. Guess what side of town?

Agree.

Anybody helping clean things up and working the problem should get free juice for a month.

Anybody harassing or assaulting utility workers should get 30 days in the hole.
