Intelligence officials have disclosed a new detailed timeline of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, acknowledging the CIA played a greater role in responding to the attack than has previously been disclosed.  A senior U.S. intelligence official also insisted that the CIA security team that initially responded to the attack was not given orders “to stand down in providing support,” as had been suggested in media reports.

For the amount of time available, they could’ve inserted by means of a Cessna 172 from Europe and still have been home for breakfast.

The CIA is not a military force. It’s an intelligence service.

Such is their legitimate charter, but since the mid 80's it became a clandestine military force. To get around the constraints of that charter, they trained foreign militias as force multipliers in larger campaigns. Think more in size of a brigade, multiplying itself with foreign battalions and regiments.

They most likely had force and power projection available.

Instead of identifying terrorists, capturing or killing them, then prosecuting them for crimes, they believe terrorists simply need to be controlled by other controllable terrorist groups.

Good analysis! Their entire policy is flawed, and if Obama gets reelected, the deaths of Americans and the seizure of our property and destruction of our interests will become so routine it will be back on pg. 15 of the NYT, if even there.

If you ask me, the rescue was lead by an Ex-Navy Seal who happen to be working for the CIA. Without him I am sure there would not have been any rescue.

Oops, sorry, forgot to respond to this one.

Yes, the CIA is involved in a lot of military actions, mostly training and assembling other forces, but they certainly are not up to a show of force on their own and do rely on the military to continue with things they have set up, to do the heavy lifting in a conflict, or for a quick show of force.

In one of those unguarded first interviews, one of the rescuers (presumably CIA) who evacuated the 30+ people said that they had no idea there were that many people trapped and that they had only one car and had to get other vehicles before they could get all the people out of there. So clearly they weren’t prepared for this - why, I don’t know - and the resources actually weren’t available to them.

There is no earthly reason to blame the CIA for not having been able to respond adequately, except that Obama has decided it’s the turn of Petraeus to go under the bus. Will he? Probably, but we shall see.
