UPDATED: Preckwinkle bullet tax proposal to curb Chicago crime

CHICAGO (WLS) - Not everybody's happy about one of the parts of the Cook County guns and ammo tax compromise that got rid of the tax on ammo but kept the $25 tax on gun purchases.

States Attorney Anita Alvarez is conspicuous by her lack of enthusiasm for the gun court idea in the guns and ammo tax compromise.

In county budget hearings, she told county commissioners she can't do it without more help, "if we create another new court call or another new court, then I'll be back here asking for more bodies. Absolutely! Right now, we are trying to stay alive because we are down everywhere. If I'm being asked to staff a new court, then I'm going to need more people."

And money for more people is what the county doesn't have a lot of right now.

An official wants to try to curb Chicago's homicide rate by imposing a new tax - a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each gun sold in the surrounding county.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is set to propose the measure Thursday when she introduces her budget to the board of commissioners.

Preckwinkle's office says the tax will raise about a $1 million a year, with some of that money helping to pay for treatment of gunshot victims.

Criminals don't buy their guns and ammo. They steal them. A tax would not affect them in any way.

Decades of welfare have come to roost in Chicago. Dads have been removed from the family structure. Kids are raised by older gang members while mom is out getting pregnant. Self responsibility has been replaced with government programs. Self motivation was replaced with drugs and booze.

So how do the sleazy Rat politicians who have destroyed Chicago want to solve the problem? Tax the 2nd Amendment.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I could say that is just one more reason “they” want to herd us into citys so that control is easier. Good luck moving farmers into the city.

On the other hand, “they” seem to forget we are a mobile society, and understand Government is the problem. So why would I let government charge me for ammo and guns when I can go outside of Crook County.

Looks like a really good way to “screw” local business engaged in guns and ammo. IIRC past laws have practically done that already in Crook County.

“A tax would not affect them in any way.”

Wait until they charge them with tax evasion. It worked for Al Capone.

The new big Cabela’s store in Hoffman estates should just close up and lock the doors. Last time I was in there (over 2 years ago) they had already closed the upstairs. I would happily go to Hammond Indiana for my Cabela’s fix

They can do what they want in Crook county as long as they don’t try to push this stupidity on us downstate.

It's the combination of "When the only tool you have is a hammer..." and the expecations of too many voters for the government to solve all problems.

In this case, the 2nd Amendment is a far better solution to that problem, IMO. To paraphrase Ron White, "You shoot at me, I shoot you back."

IF the thugs purchase gvns from stores (via friend, etc) an extra $25 will not make them rethink their life of crime; "gee, life in prison didn't set me straight but now that there's a $25 tax on my new gat..." .

And what?, an extra $2.50 on a box of amm0? That harms the sh00ters & sportsmen not the group of people that will blow $500 on the new phone or a couple hundred on the new Nikes instead of feeding their kids/paying their bills.

Good luck moving farmers into the city.

EPA has already banned farmers from setting foot on any part of their own property except the house and access road to protect rats and butterflies (so far).
