Mammoth storm Sandy plunges NYC into darkness

Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday by a superstorm that overflowed the city's historic waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to nearly a million people. The city had shut its mass transit system, schools, the stock exchange and Broadway and ordered hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to leave home to get out of the way of the superstorm Sandy as it zeroed in on the nation's largest city. Residents spent much of the day trying to salvage normal routines, jogging and snapping pictures of the water while officials warned the worst of the storm had not hit. By evening, a record 13-foot storm surge was threatening Manhattan's southern tip, utilities darkened parts of downtown Manhattan on purpose to avoid storm damage and water started lapping over the seawall in Battery Park City, flooded rail yards and parts of the financial district. "Now it's really turning into something," said Brian Damianakes, taking shelter in an ATM vestibule and watching a trash can below down the street. Shortly after the massive storm made landfall in southern New Jersey, Consolidated Edison cut power deliberately to about 6,500 customers in downtown Manhattan to avert further damage. Then, huge swaths of the city went dark, losing power to 250,000 customers in Manhattan, Con Ed spokesman Chris Olert said. Another 1 million customers lost power earlier Monday in New York City, the northern suburbs and coastal Long Island, where floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water. The storm had only killed one New York City resident by Monday night, a man who died when a tree fell on his home in the Flushing section of Queens.

I just called my 80 year old Uncle in NJ and he is in the dark in his house. We didn’t stay on the phone long because we didn’t want to run down his battery. He said he hopes the roof doesn’t come off.

Not makin’ lite of what’s happening, but the gov. up there seems to be more concerned about what size coke people should drink than preparing for something like this.

I was thinking the same thing. Too late now if he doesn’t, but I am guessing he does. He lives in the burbs, “bedroom community” type place.

Two points of view, from opposite viewpoints:

1. All those people who stayed in Manhattan, because they live in high-risers, now realzie that their elevators don't work.

2. Just about every hi-rise apt building in Manhattan has underground parking..often 40-50 feet BELOW ground level..think of all those Caddys, Mercedes, Jags, and the odd Rolls and Ferrari, now totally submerged..

Thanks bimboeruption. Could have an impact on turnout and voter enthusiasm.

Imagine if this were a cat 3 or higher storm with more of a direct hit? It would make Katrina look like a summer outing.

Many of those submerged cars will show up in used car lots in the Midwest. Make sure you use carfax when purchasing a used car or have it inspected by a mechanic.

You may not have intended it but your post sounds snarky. I have 2 children in NYC. Honestly, I have been amazed at how nice most people are. I always thought New Yorkers were some sort of alien to live in a city that size (I live in Denver). Both kids are holed up in an apartment in the financial district but have no power. It is difficult to not be able to do anything.

If it's going on via Twitter then I imagine there will be vigilante groups before long. They can watch Twitter too.

“Mammoth storm Sandy”

Katrina, Cat 5, 175mph
Allen, Cat 5, 190mph
Andrew, Cat 5, 175mph
Camille, Cat 5, 190mph measured before it destroyed the measuring instruments.

Sandy, Cat 1, 90mph. (the “monster storm” in history, because it happened in the belt between DC and NYC, the most important place on earth. Also, gave Obozo a chance to play master and commander of the far side of the earth)
