If Americans want New York and California to run the nation, then they should go ahead and do this.
The real reason not to mess with the Founders design is that the Founders designed a republic and not a democracy. So, if we want to live under mob rule (pure democracy) then go right ahead. If, however, you want thoughtful men and women from various regions to come together as delegates to make decisions for the nation, including the representation of the regions from which they come, then continue with the Divinely inspired, ingenious plan put together by America’s Founding Fathers.
