A World War II veteran who inspired many with his determination to vote even though he had end-stage liver cancer died Wednesday.

Frank Tanabe's daughter Barbara Tanabe said he died at her Honolulu home, where he has spent the past few weeks in hospice. He was 93.

Barbara Tanabe said she put the American flag up outside the home to mark the day for him and their family.

"He really liked it when I put out the flag," she said.

Hundreds of thousands of people saw a photo of Frank Tanabe filling out his absentee ballot with the help of his daughter last week, after his grandson posted the picture on the social media site Reddit.

We may lose the battle of Hawaii, but may we win the war.

Probably voted democrat.

Most WWII Vets I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet were always die hard dems(yet all were conservatives). Probably a Roosevelt/Truman effect.

Ummm, I may be wrong, but I believe it is illegal to count the absentee vote of someone who is dead on Nov. 6...

(of course but for the dead voting, Democrats would consistently lose...)

If you are dead on Election Day, you shouldn’t get to vote.

"He’s a WWII vet and an absolute conservative."

Eisenhower might have got to him early enough before he could become a hard core democrat back then. My grandfather was in Korea, and that's how he turned out. Republican/Conservative to the core. Always remembered him hating Truman, and this was during the 80s when I was growing up. lol

In this case people would know, but if it had just been mailed how would the county clerk know you died.

The ballets in California have doubled envelopes.
they go to the clerk, they are checked to make sure the out side is valid, then the outside envelope is tossed and the inside put in the ballot box.

It makes sense, yet trying to figure out how they would know.

“Ummm, I may be wrong, but I believe it is illegal to count the absentee vote of someone who is dead on Nov. 6...”

Not in Texas. Once a vote is cast, it is cast. That is a major reason I always early vote as early as possible. Never know when the moment will come.

Different states may have different rules, however. It devolves to the states.
